Update went to A & E as pain was unbearable and was struggling to walk

Hi everybody just a wee update on my situation, I went to A & E yesterday as the pain was unbearable and I am struggling to walk  even with crutches.  It is 22 weeks today that I have been on the waiting list and still no date I am at my wits end.  Anyway the A&E doctor came in and asked me to walk she said you are not putting any weight on that leg at all I said I can't.  She then got me a gown and asked me to get up on the bed meanwhile the tears are tripping me I said are you kidding, anyway she got me a step to get onto the bed she tried to examine my leg but she was shocked as she said you have no movement at all in that.  She then left to look at the X-rays I had in May and when she came back she was shocked saying I'm not a bone doctor but you have nothing there no joint there is nothing left, which I already knew.  She sent me for an X-ray and said at least that's you in now so I really got my hopes up and thought this is it.  When I came back from the X-ray she came in with the orthopaedic surgeon and he was really nice as he explained that the reason I have not had my operation yet is that my hip is a more complex operation and it is my surgeon and in his words the expert need to get a date which they both agree to get me in, apparently the expert does his bit of the operation and then my surgeon takes over.  He said if it had just been a ordinary hip replacement he would have kept me in and done it right away but he can't do that surgery, he said my surgeon is one of the few surgeon that deal with complex operation.  He said he was really sorry and he realises the pain is horrendous but to take the Morphine when I need them.  He said he didn't think I would be waiting much longer.  I came home and I struggle to get out and in the bed I dread when I need the toilet as the pain when I try to walk is ridiculous so now I am just praying that the letter drops through my letter box any day now as I am struggling big time.  Anyway thanks for listening guys, and for all the messages of support it means a lot.

Big Hugs & Love

Dear Jacq

I'm so glad that something good may come as the result of your A and E visit.

I'm really interested and please do not answer if you would rather not but why is it necessary to have an expert assist an experienced hip surgeon.

Hope you can control the pain until the hip is fixed.

Cheers Richard

Oh Jacq, that sounds terrible! I do hope you get your treatment soon. What a nightmare for you. At least you know why there has been a delay, not that it makes it any better for you.

Best Wishes

Good luck Jacq!  I just came from my surgeon's office, it's been 12 weeks since I fractured my hip, originally called a "non-displaced fracture," now it is displaced and moving around.  Maybe that's why I have so much pain.  Not thrilled that I am scheduled for surgery, but I can't take the pain anymore and since it's now displaced, I'm sure it is only a matter of time before this becomes an urgent situation.  I wish you all the best!  Janet

Hi Richard I'm not sure all the surgeon said to me was that my operation needs two surgeons because it is a complex hip, but he did not explain why he just said that the expert does his part first and then my surgeon who has 35 years experience will step in when he is finished and do the rest.  I probably should have asked more questions but I was exhausted and in agony as I had been there for hours.  I will let you know if I find out anything else oh and he also said that most hips are replaced in 60-90 minutes and mines will be approx 5 hours, but when I had my right hip done that was 4 and a half hours. Hope your well Richard.

Dear Jacq

Many thanks for your reply. Golly what an epic surgery! I'm sure many here will be very interested in hearing everything you can tell us about your surgery.

Cheers Richard

Jacq when I had my first hip replacement it was 6 hours, 3 weeks later Im having a hip revision because I dislocated my hip another 6 hour surgery.  Mine was pretty complex too.  I saw the X-ray and I had no head and half the cup was gone and it was pushed up bone on bone losing lenght. Was almost 2 inches short.   I'm sure yours is more severe.  Again wishing you all the best and God's blessings to you.   LD

Hi Richard no problem and I will keep you posted as and when things happen fingers crossed it won't be too long now.

Hi Jacq:  Surgery is scheduled for August 30.  He wanted to do it tomorrow! but I'm still wrapping my head around the notion of surgery.  I thought I was going to escape without it.  My "non-displaced fracture" is now displaced.  When I scoot myself into place on my bed, I can feel it moving.  I'm not crazy about having to have surgery, but I'm so tired of the pain, literally, I just want this ordeal over with.  I read these posts and see there are still people post HRT who still have pain.  I hope mine is resolved with the surgery.  Do keep us all posted and thank you for your kind support.  Hugs and more hugs for you!  Janet

Hi Janet when I got my right hip done it was amazing the pain went away immediately, please don't be scared it will be the best thing you do and the fact that you will have no pain will be fabulous. Good Luck and let me know how you get on.

Dear Jacq,

I so hope the times passes quickly. I am definitely not in as much pain as you. I'm keeping you in my thoughts and praying for that letter to come quickly. I'm in the US and things are so different. I still had a 4 month wait but not your pain. Best of luck, and let us know when the letter arrives. Hugs.

Hi Linda oh that is awful yea my surgeon said my ball joint is not where it should be it is floating about outside my hip somewhere which is why I can no longer lie down in bed, I have been sitting up in bed sleeping or trying to since last August it is a nightmare. If you don't mind me asking how did you manage to dislocate your hip? Thank You for your concern and hope your revision goes well.

I wil be SO HAPPY to be pain free!  I'm also excited (is that the right word when talking about having surgery?  LOL) that he is going in, rather than a 12" incision on my side, he will be making a 3" incision at the top of my thigh.  Not that it really matters, my bathing suit days are not a big concern to me anymore.  More than anything, I just want to be able to 1) walk; 2) sit normally on the toilet (too much information); and 3) which is really #1 - to be pain free.  Thank you so much for the encouragement!  I really need it and appreciate it!  Big hugs back at you . . . xoxo

Honestly I'm not sure. I only remember one Saturday afternoon i was in my room I went to my dresser...I wasn't facing the dresser I twisted to open drawer I got my shirt, twisted again to close it when I felt a pull in my buttock for that day and Sunday I had a pain in the buttock by Monday it went away. I told the home physical therapist but she didn't seem concerned since the pain went away.   So not sure if it was that. There was no pop or real pain when it dislocated.  Dr tried to pop back in but no luck so had to cut me again, posterior, first was anterior, and he saw ball of hip was caught on back of cup, stem and cup were both lose so decided on total hip revision. What a nightmare it was for me.  But I'm slowly getting there if only I could get over this cutaneous nerve pain and sensitivity.
