Upping the pace

Hello citizens of hip land and those waiting a visa to join. Just passed my 5 week post op. After my successful outing by train and negotiating the Saturday shoppers in a busy precinct and clocking up 5.5 miles. Oh and using public toilet without raiser just a delicate balancing operation I decided to try something else today. I needed a couple of pints of milk to tide me over till online shop arrives tomorrow. So donned the rucksack. Set the mileage app on phone and decided to UP THE PACE. Took my walking poles and strode off. Over the past few outings the 1.2 miles from my house to M&S has taken me 40 mins each way. Today I arrived at M&S

In exactly 15 mins. Took 20 mins on the way back as it is uphill and also a little tired and of course carrying a little extra weight in rucksack. Felt that I had achieved the London Marathon. Flexibility is a little better and I cut my own toenails not bad for this 66 year old

I think instead of always increasing the distance perhaps now and then to drop distance and increase speed

Chin up and put your best hip forward, you know you want to and walking can do no harm

Always remember your precautions but it's all good.

Hi Ann , you are doing  amazing ! I had adouble hip replacement 5 and a half weeks ago and did'nt know how far I should be walking . I think I do about 500 yrd s three times a day and try and push it a bit further every few days . A ruck sack is a good idea . I live in the sticks so have only been to town a couple of times when a neighbor has taken me , just used one cructh the second time . It's hard to know just how I'm doing as there does'nt seem to be a lot of folk had two done . Do you still have stiffness if you sit a bit too long ,  I try not to . 

I will have my 6 wk check soon so hoping to get the go ahead to drive . That will make a big difference . It's great to share experiences on here , it does give you a boost , so keep up the good work Ann , you sound like a very determined lady .I am 50 and need to be back walking my dogs and doing a bit of hillwalking .

I don't think I could manage that at 7 weeks.

My appointment with specialist is on Tuesday. Really hoping he is encouraging and pleased with my progress.

Presuming I'll be able to drive again, I have arranged a swim and an induction at the gym. Oh and a pedicure just for good measure!

Yes to stiffness if sitting too long. You are so brave to have 2 done at once. Think we should all listen to our bodies. I need to get back to my passion of photography and the kit I lug around is like carrying a 3 year old child. Want to be very stable before I try and will have to wait till down to 1 crutch or stick. I do not use any support indoors. Living on a slope makes me feel unsteady so not ready to ditch support yet. I am on an 8 week recovery so have to take precautions for a bit longer. Suggest you walk to another lamppost each time you are out or at least half way to one. It is good to be able to measure the distance to gauge how you are doing

Hope you get the all clear and enjoy your gym. I used to be s gym user but prefer being outside and usually walk up to 10 miles a day or at least 5 times a week so look forward to getting back to exploring

fab walk then Ann - did you buy an M and S raspberry trifle to celebrate?!

I've walked by Exeter quaysideat brisk pace  to buy Observer - again about 15 min and 20 min back. Sleepy after but that might be the wine.

tomorrow is 6 week check up at 8 weeks

Tues leki poles on Dartmoor if weather good and friend is free!

Well done Ann.  I think that's a good idea about reducing the distance but increasing speed.  I find walking at a medium pace is fine but if I increase the pace, my hip tends to ache afterwards. , I am now doing medium pace for a while and then increasing it for a shorter distance and then back to a slower pace again.  It seems to be working okay.
