Urethral stricture - my experience

Hi, I am curious, what specifically were the incidents?

The stricture completely blocked the urethra and I couldn’t pee. The first few times i didnt realize so I left it a while before going to hospital and by the time i was there I was jumping up and down in pain and the bladder wasn’t too far away from bursting. They would then need to do an emergency catheterization but a few times they tried from largest down to smallest size and still couldn’t so had to go through my abdomen to release some pee and the pressure and later they would stretch out the urethra. … all very traumatic and intensely painful. And it damaged the urethra causing more scar tissue… I guess that’s why I call them incidents.

Can you remember anything what caused the stricture?

the only thing i can remember is a bicycle accident when i was taking a big jump on my bmx bike. probably around 9-11 at the time. i came down with a thud on the crossbar. and my testicles blew up in size for what seemed ages.

Bicycle accidents are a common cause.

I agree. Bicycles are a common cause. Last year I injured my perineum. Now (1 year later) I still have discomfort urinating. I am nervous I might get the strictures as well.

you could or it could be a long time away. hopefully you’ll be all fine!

I’ve now got a date for my stricture op end of this month. Currently I can pee slowly bit if I want to empty I must strain a bit. I am wondering if my stricture which is nearly 10 weeks old has settled (perhaps not need the Op which surgeon says he will make cuts) or will it slowly close up?

Th other query I have is with the self-catheterisation when it needs to be inserted say once a week, how long does it have to stay in?

If one has to later go to hospital to get an empty why hasn’t doing it oneself worked?

Thanks.

Sorry, I forgot to ask with my reply above: do they give drugs to take after stricture op?

I had structure surgery 14 months ago. I would say mine went well. What a pleasure to be able to urinate normally. I empty a full bladder in about 10 seconds. No pain. Feels good! Yay!! FYI mine was from a bike accident some 50 years ago
It does seem as though the urethra, possibly at the point of the stricture repair, but almost seems more like the
sphincter muscles at the bladder opening, tends to shrink a little in a weeks time. I do self catheter about once a week. In, pee, and out in under a minute. Seems to keep me just fine.

@carlo86905 I just had 1st Stage Buccal Mucosa Urethroplasty 8 days ago and still have both catheters in for 2 more weeks. How is everything going for you the last few year since you’ve had this? hopefully no recurrence!

Will you proceed to 2nd stage?, a few days ago was precisely 2ys from 1st recon bmg, but have decided not to proceed with second stage for quite a long list of reasons and risks factors. Fistula damage, with any kind of recurrence all procedures are much more complex, in my case I have LS and had urethral strictures, so if post a potential 2nd stage closing urethroplasty i m pretty much FU…lol, The 2 ys mark is very important both for urethral strictures and LS, beyond this time mark, come backs become more rare…How s the pain now ? started a while ago a patients group on Fb for urethroplasties and LS patients - https://www.facebook.com/groups/249795366133620

I was diagnosed with the stricture about two years ago. Health insurance didn’t cover the procedure so I’ve been dealing with it for about six years now I can’t eat sugar, caffeine alcohol, anything spicy or anything with citrus or else it makes it so I cannot urinate at all dealing with the series restructure has been the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with in my life sometimes for no reason all the sudden I can’t urinate in the urge is so intense. It makes me emotional. I have surgery in a couple days and I’m really anxious for it although I’m really excited not to be dealing with this anymore, pushing to go to the bathroom, his maid my back hurts so incredibly bad my head pulse and my abdomen feel like somebody has been hitting it with a sledgehammer. I cannot wait for this to be over with.

What type of surgery are you going to have? Hank
