Urethral Stricture

Hi, 7 weeks ago I had TURPs operation, which went well for the 4 weeks then my flow began be reduced. Now it sometimes only a dripple. After consultation with my consultant he suggested that it could be an urethral stricture.

I haver another UT scan, which confirmed that I am not emptying my bladder fully. I have a flexible cystoscopy planned, which I understand will allow the consultant to plan the repair. I got the impression it be be using a CCTV probe with knife that will remove the damges scar

Does anyone have any experience of such a operation. Thanks

Hello Ralph,

On 3/12 I had a small tumour removed from my urethra. it was thought that it's occurrence was iatrogenic ( I. e. It had occurred as a result of treatment ) ... Scopes / Radiotherapy etc.   Fortunately the Path on it was benign.

I had a spinal anaesthetic.  A laser surgery knife was used.  Hardly any bleeding at all.  Catheter remained in until the following morning and discharged shortly afterwards.  Most uncomfortable part was that the catheter was inserted a long way into the bladder in order to create an anti bleeding tamponard effect.  This meant that the whole time it was in ( about 16 hrs ) I felt an acute unremitting urge to urinate and so managed only one hour of sleep.

initially when I went for cystoscopy it was to look for what was thought to be,  like yourself,  a stricture.  So no,  as it turns out I do not have a stricture.  But I hope perceivable similarity in the procedures gives you some idea.

Hopefully it will all go well for you.

My flow wasn't good either before or after EBRT x42.   Scopes and catheterization improve it for a week and then it's back to difficulties. I hope you do better.

Regards

Dudley

During my TURPS surgery the urethra was diffusely narrow. The Consultant thinks now scar could have developed. Hence my problem

I too have always had a narrow urethra and remember decades ago an exam requiring a tube to be passed up to both kidneys was nearly aborted because the standard tubes could not be passed through. Happily and this notwithstanding,  the overall size of my genitalia is not an embarrassment.

A not uncommon side-effect to EBRT is that one may be more susceptible to strictures,  which can develop spontaneously months / years down the track.  Preceding trauma is known to be a causative factor.  So somehow,  I think I will be a likely candidate for stricture(s) going forward.
