Hello!
Was diagnosed with a UTI a week ago and finished my antibiotics on Sunday. I was thrilled because I went about 5 days without the excruciating pain I'd been experiencing. But as soon as I stopped the pills, my pain came back. My urine sample still tested positive for blood so I'm on round 2 of antibiotics. Has anyone had this constant pain? My pain is there all the time in the bladder area. Any things that helped? Cranberry juice?
Thanks,
Sue
Hello.
With UTIs the pain is constant, i had it non stop, it was a lot worse when I urinated but it was constant pain. horrible, horrible pain. Best thing I found was a hot water bottle, and cranberry pills, cranberry juice can help, but its best to get as pure cranberry as you can, you can get cranberry pills which I still use now, even after being clear of UTI since January, I still take my cranberry pills everyday! hope it helps, I had what you had the last time I had a UTI (my 8th time in 7 months) and it took 2 courses of antibiotics to get better! Hope you start to feel better soon!
Thank you for responding so quickly. Wow - I would never in a million years think a urinary infection would hurt so much. I actually went to the ER a week ago in excruciating pain - just couldn't believe how much it hurt. I was just thrilled to have a few days without pain, only to find it all back again today. My doctor says I'm only 'half' healed - LOL - and need another week of antibiotics. Then I have to send in another urine sample for re-testing. I have been taking cranberry juice twice a day - are the pills better? Thanks for the tip of the hot water bottle. I'm going to try that. Hope you're all healed.
Doctors usually prescribe the commonest antibiotic first but if the UTI doesnt clear up or comes back quicly you always need a different one. This has happened to me several times. I now know that Trimethoprim doesnt ever work for me and I insist on Nitrofurantoin from the start.
Never found Cranberry to do any good so I'm now trying D Mannose tablets as a preventative measure......only been using a couple of weeks so cant say yet if they work! [no good for diabetics by the way].
A hot water bottle is ideal for that horrendous pain...I always have one handy as I am very prone to UTIs
Thanks, Marina, for responding. I'll also have to try the hot water bottle and look into those Mannose tablets. Still shocked at how painful they are. Hope you never have one again.
Hi Sue,
I feel your pain (literally!) as we speak I have a chronic UTI and feel as though someone is pooring acid down my urinary tract the burning sensation is so severe it often causes vomiting. I am 28 and I've been suffering recurring UTI's since I was 21. I drink cranberry juice most days, take cranberry tablets every day (20,000mg) and take a product called Hiprex. I've found that powdered products such as Ural do nothing and I am also now resistant to most antibiotics. This is due to doctors for so many years prescribing rubbish antibiotics, and me not questioning them because I'd take anything to stop the pain. I have found 99% of doctors do not take UTI's seriously, even when I have presented to surgeries sobbing uncontrollably from the pain. I hope you don't have recurrent UTI's like I do & feel better really soon!!
Hi Sue, I also feel your pain, I have had a uti from March 2015 I have been on numerous antibiotics I do get some relief for a week or two then it all flares up again. I have been to see a urologist who did an MRI scan from my kidneys to my bladder to see if I had kidney stones that came back all clear, I now have terrible thrush which I also can't get cleared up because in constantly on antibiotics, The back pain is terrible and the burning just makes me want to cry!!! I hope you get your uti sorted out if anyone has any advice on how I could get rid of thus uti I would be really grateful as I'm in a lot of pain!!
Hi Pela,
my father aged 50 years have this problem for 6 months. he had visited specialist and he said it will remain life long and u have to take tablet whole life. whenever he took tablet pain is low. Now i m planning to change doctor. i just want to know what initial precautions and preventive measures i should take during treatment. is there any permanent way to solve this problem??
Hi,
I wish I knew! I don't know if there are any permanent measures to stop it. I'd see a urologist not a local doctor. Preventative measures for me include; no wine, avoid foods such as chocolate, orange juice, pineapple, oranges/lemons/limes and tomatoes as they are all acidic & only make the problem so much worse! Also coffee & smoking. Try to drink a min of 2 liters of water a day. Also try cranberry tablets
Good luck!
Hi everyone sorry about the essay but Im wondering if you can help??.
I've suffered with reaccuring uti's for over 10 years now.
I'm at the end of my tether!. After been treat with trimoprhrim for years, October last year after a ultrasound on my kidney and bladder I was given a new antibiotic called nitrofuration, i was told my body had built up an immunity to the trimoprhrim and that the new tablets where a preventative antibiotic and i needed to take it after sex as they believed that was likely the cause of my infections.
Unfortunately last year due to my absences from work i lost my job which was really upsetting for me. The new antibiotics where like a breath of fresh air to me and seemed to work really well, up until recently the uti's are back again! I've been ill from work on 2 occasions now in the past month! The uti's are so uncomfortable and up until recently have been giving me very bad pelvic pains, i work with children and the uti's often leave me feeling run down and confused.
More worrying my urine sample are showing high levels white blood cells and blood in my urine. I've read up on this and it's worrying me seeing all the possible causes.
I''m booked in to see my gynaecologist aswell on Friday to see if there is any problems in that region which could be causing me to keep falling I'll as I've also been experiencing bleeding after sex .
I've got a lot going on at the moment and I'm worried sick! Even more so at the fact that the sickness absences from work could possibly mean I could get the sack again which is the last thing I need.
Has anyone has similar experiences or could offer me any help and advice.
Every time I seem to go to the doctor's they seem to fob me off with more antibiotics.
Thanks sarah
Sue I can relate to your situation all too well. Last year I kept having many UTIs and had to go to the doctor a few times before it went away. Mean while the pain was horrible! Cranberry juice does help a lot but what helped me the most was Cystex my doctor recommened it and it really did wonders when i just wanted to scream or cry because of the burning pain. I hope this helps! Feel better!
I've been going through the same thing for three years till I finally found a great urologist that prescribed Estrace cream once a week. A miracle! But I'm also in my changes and was told that had something to do with the uti's. Check with your doctor.
Some people do seem to improve with D Mannose but after taking them diligently for several months back came the UTI. Antibiotics only work in the short term and there doesnt seem to be any permanent cure.
I did find that Vagifem oestrogen pessaries helped enormously but when the manufacturers lowered the dose in each one, back came that UTI.....big sigh. I have seen urologists, urogynaecologsts and had numerous scans, xrays etc etc,but nothing shows as causing the problem. My Mother suffered terribly and so does my daughter,so I am convinced it can run in families. Why do some women never get the problem? I wish I knew.
The urinary antibiotics are such a good moneymaker for the drug companies they probably are not interested in a cure.
If only men suffered like this...I'm sure we would have a cure pretty quick.
Try the Estrace cream, since I'm using it have not had a uti, it's a life saver, no more horrific pain ! It's almost a year now. I was getting them for 3 years every 2-3 weeks apart !
Hi Marina. I've been suffering myself with horrible urethral pain which started two months back as a UTI and after that cleared I was left with a constant soreness and pain (like a constant needle). I wanted to reply on your post because of your question.. why do some women never get the problem? I don't know the exact answer but I am also in a family of women who have frequent UTIs (my mum's stopped after her last pregnancy over 25 years ago because she did not take antibiotics as she was afraid, suffered a full blown fever and it seems the body fought off the infection). The uro suggested a reason when he had a look - he said my urethral opening is tucked in much more away than other women. This automatically creates a more suitable moist environment for bacteria so easier to get the UTI. Also, it could mean the urethra is shorter - so it's easier for bacteria to grab on and work up the urethra. I was advised against having a CT scan (as the doctor did not feel it was necessary, this is more so necessary if a doctor suspects cancer) because of my age and cystoscopy result, however, I feel like a CT scan might say something about the shape of your urethra, and might give some results/reason as to why we get UTIs more often than others. Hope this helps.
Thanks for your reply and interest Maggie. I have often said I think we could have a familial history of short urethras.
Indeed. Are you well now? Has anything in particular helped? I'm slowly starting to get better. I have to say D-mannose did not work at all for me.
Havent yet found anything that has really helped, apart from antibiotics[nitrofurantoin] and of course,no sex. haha. Not ideal. I use vagifem pessaries twice a week but the new low dose doesnt help at all. The original higher dose has been discontinued by the manufacturers, but when I used those I stayed clear of the dreaded UTI for 2+ years. I may ask doc to give me the UK eqivalent of Estrace. Will give anything a try. I dread the next attack. I feel I have a big black cloud hanging over me.
