Useful aids for 'hippies'

i have bought a long handled shoehorn as a starter, I did consider a new chair but think I will manage with an extra cushion or blocks. How on earth do you manage without a bath for 6 weeks? So many

questions are going through my head. Thanks in anticipation.

hi tony

notsure if you get this twice i lost my first reply so bear with me. I have had two hip replacements this year and on my second am 2 weeks post op. re bath I managed ok with shower but you could addshower stool which might help. re sleepiing on back i couldnt manage without my wedge pillow which raises your head and makes easier to get in and out of bed. I also bought a leg raise in bed too to help. re chair. I just put very big cushions on my chair and managed fine with that. good luck.

Hi tony. 5 wks 1 day.

I hired a shower stool. Love it. ..i dont need it now but stil use it.

I also hired. A raised toilet seat. This is a must.

I hurt my groin trying to drag myself up the bed so hubby hired an over bed lifter. The triangle that gangs over the bed. I thoroughly recommend it. I also purchased a cavas on metal frame adjustable wedge for the bed. Stops you sliding down on pillows.

I purchased a leg lifter. Its a must

Ling shoe horn and grabber sticks are great.

Oh. I was allowed a shower from day 1. They used waterproof dressings.

I couldn't use my shower as it was in the bath so couldn't get my legs over the bath edge. I had a perching stool from the hospital and just had strip washes.  My partner did my lower legs and feet! It wasn't too bad. 6 weeks soon passes and then with a bit of help from my partner i finally got my leg over the bath side without bending at the hip too much so I could shower.

hey tony,

how are you ? is your surgery date scheduled ?

Once the staples are removed (usually after 14 days), you can take a shower - If you have waterproof dressing, of course you can shower right away - make sure there is someone with you though ... A bath requires climbing in and breaking the 90 degrees rule - not sure if the soaking in warm water is good for the fresh wound ...also greater risk for infection ..

My grabbers are invaluable - makes me independent - pick up, reach for things etc - toilet seat raiser - had 2 mattrasses on bed plus mattrass topper instead of blocks - blocks under couch -

oh,and a sock aid -

A bed lifter sounds great -

please  come back if you have more questions or concerns -

big warm hug

Yes, our shower is over the bath so that is the difficulty there. I think the hospital supply the toilet seat, possibly a charge.

Subject to the pre op tests it should be on 6th November. I think it is two nights in hospital, hopefully it is all worthwhile.

How soon can you fly or go on a cruise post op, any idea?

i flew shorthaul to spain after 12 weeks (between hip replacements) but not sure about insurance cover I was ok as surgeon agreed ok. i had ceramic hip so didnt show up in the airport scanner either. some airlines can refuse you so have to check per airline.

I showered on day 2 at the hospital sitting on a chair, I did not have staples my incision was glued shut. At home I was able to lift my leg over the tub, and stood and took a shower at day 6. I don't understand why the wait for you?

Try a sunlounger for first few weeks, then you can build up chair with pillows /cushions .

Why did you have to hire equipment, OT should have provided it for you !!

Hate to burst your bubble Tony but my consultant said 12 weeks no bath !!! I'm now week 8 and SO can't wait for soak . Didn't have long handled shoe horn (wish I had) but get as many gadgets as you can as I was naive even though I had worked in occupational therapy in the past . If you are fiercely independent or live alone the better organised you are the smoother things will run

Actually Tony just remembered my mum (75) had THR last year her shower over bath she managed fine . Luckily we have big shower but I always took my grabber in with me and stick obviously not using those now

I used a dressing gown cord to loop around my foot and lift my leg into the bed. It worked a charm.

Yes that works too. .the difference is a leg lifter is like a dog collar and lead with a sturdy wire running through it so you simole hold and slip over the foot. With a dressing gown cord you have to be sitting and its like trying to lasso your foot. Lol

Hi Tony! My surgeon let me fly (9 huors) from London to my home in the Caribbean 2 weeks post op! As long as you upgrade to Club/Business Class, order assisted boarding and disembarkment and wear TED socks for the flight you should be fine, I've been home a week tomorrow and it feels great to be home!

Here in Australia you have to hire. Nothing is free

Here in USA nothing is free, I bought all my stuff on Amazon, Insurance paid for a portion of my walker that's it....
