Uterine Fibroids

I just wondered if any ladies on here have been offered subtotal hysterectomy rather than Total Hysterectomy for Fibroids. My Gynocologist offered me total hysterectomy a few years ago and I assumed it was just womb removal but it's not they also take out the cervix. Subtotal is just womb only removal. I refused it but wondered if Gynocolgist are offering women the choice of which type of Hysterectomy is right for them. For example if a woman agrees to a Total Hystertomy then the ovaries can also be removed without having the women's consent. Was just curious as I can't work out why my Gynoclogist offered me a Total instead of Subtotal Hysterectomy.

I'm due to have a total hysterectomy next month. I have fibroids including a large degenerative one - this could be the cause of constant nerve pain in my buttock and shin. I also have cysts (look to be benign) in my ovaries which is the reason for the total I believe.

No total only, seems on the basis of 'as you're 58 you don't need any of it any more' , and it's safer out than in eg you won't get cervical or ovarian cancer. But I'm not happy about that.

A lot of gynaes like to remove cervix due to ongoing risk of cervical cancer and occasionally fibroids can grow from top of cervix, plus if someone wasn't menopausal they may still get a discharge every month. Others believe cervix gives support and adds to enjoyment of sex. Personally, if you have never had abnormal smears I would keep it.

Hi Christine they were going to do a Total on me and I was 48 at the time. I did read somewhere of a woman who said she insisted on a subtotal and also was adamant that she could sign the form at pre op Assesment and have a carbon copy for herself. Don't know if it stopped her having a total done though. It should be a woman's choice just like treatment for Fibriods should be. I'm all for a woman deciding what is best for her. You should be able to trust Gynocolgist it seems you can't. I would object for sexual pleasure reasons. When men have a vasectomy they don't remove their testicles do they?

Have you looked at Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)? All the fibroids are treated, procedure is outpatient, completely non-surgical, patients get the relief they are seeking and they get to keep their uterus ! Sick and tired of doctors telling patients that their uterus is worthless after childbearing. There are a lot of important functions of the uterus besides bearing children. The uterus is important for women psychologically, sexually, bone health, and cardiovascular health.

Hi j I yes I have had UFE 11 weeks ago. Gynocolgist lied to me and blocked me from having it but in the end he caved in as I am very stubborn. A lot of women though believe what they say. And you put it very well about docs telling women that womb is worthless after kids. I have not had kids didn't want them but cos I was lied to I was determined not to have a Hysterectomy especially when I found out they were gonna remove my cervix even though I have never had an abnormal test result. So why remove it? Gynocologist need to start treating patients better I have put an official complaint In about mine. i will never have a Hysterectomy ever.

It's bad when you have to rely on forums and the Internet for your treatment. There definitely is no equality when it comes to our reproductive organs. Can you imagine a man being treated this way. They would not put up with it. Sorry I'm ranting.

I would recommend UFE to anyone it just makes me angry that Gynocologists tell lies to patients. I'm even angry at myself for allowing Gyn to mess me around for 12 months. Don't want that to happen to anyone else.

Hi, there just reading your post & wondered how you got on with your hysterectomy. I have one very large around 12cm fibroid, I too have constant nerve pain in my buttock, have had ullipristal acetate for 6 months, Zoladex implants for 6 months & now back on Ullipristal

- none of which have worked to reduce its size) so I'm looking towards either an arterial embolisation or hysterectomy. I know its still early days for you but I just wondered how you were feeling now? I'm totally sick of being on hormones.

Hi Patricia,

Can you please tell me a bit more about your experience of a UFE please. As I am to discuss with a radiologist this month. I have one very large fibroid seemingly I'm right on the edge of being able to have a UFE, due to size & keyhole surgery due to size. I'm overweight too, but had 6 months of ullipristal, 6 months of Zoladex (cold turkey no tibolone) & now back on the ullipristal. Sick of hormones & hot flushes! Would like my life back but a bit worried about it all. Did you have a few fibroids or one large one? Was it really painful? How long did the pain last? How old are you? Did they say having a UFE would prevent you having to have a hysterectomy? My gynie has said it may be that I end up on nthe operating table anyway, but to chat to radiologist & see what he thinks. All the drugs havent reduced the size, so I'm thinking if UFE does & I do have to have a hysterectomy that I could have it keyhole. Sore hip, (injections) sore back (injections) would like life back I'm only 45 & my son is 8 but I feel like 80!
