I was recently hospitalized with sepsis from a uti that I felt no symptoms from. I was released but still had the uti caused by e.coli and was prescribed levaquin for 10 days. However, I was changed and put on bactrim bcs of tendon aches. I am 23, this is the first time it's happened to me and I am very scared. Am I gonna get better?? If so when? Has someone gone through this or something similar?
Leviquin is part of the Flouroquinolone family (which includes Cipro, Levaquin, Floxin, Avelox, Tequin and Noroxin, just to name a few). These antibiotics are notorious. This family of antibiotics carries some very dangerous side effects. Even the FDA has put out ‘black box’ warnings on these drugs.
Some of the side effects they can cause are: Tendonitis, Tendon Rupture, Tendon, Ligament, Joint and Muscle Damage, Vision Damage, Hearing Loss,Taste Perversion, Peripheral Neuropathy (Tingling, burning sensation),
Insomnia, Nightmares, Anxiety Attacks, Depersonalization, Cognitive Disorders, Brain, Heart, Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Blood and Endocrine Disorders
Severe Psychotic Reactions, Suicidal Thoughts or Actions and
Gastrointestinal Damage.
Go back to Doctor and get a recheck on your urine.
I did. I was switched to bactrim. Do you know if that will work?

If you're as sick as you sound, and your doctor won't admit you to the hospital for IV antibiotics, you should be changing doctors. Sometimes IV antibiotics are called for, especially when nothing by-mouth is working.
One of my cousins recently had a UTI and her doctor had her urine cultured and, when it was shown to be contaminated, immediately placed her in isolation in her care facility until she had finished 14 days of an antibiotic given by the care facility RN through a heplock and a second urine culture showed her to be infection free.

I have no more answers. I don't know what more you can do other than go to yet a third doctor.
There are any number of reasons why you could still have the burning and pain yet not have an active UTI. Have you spoken to your doctor about Interstitial Cystitis (painful bladder syndrome)? Mimics the exact symptoms of a UTI with no infection present.
Try staying away from all acidic foods/drinks (tomatoes, garlic, onions, coffee/tea/soda to name a few) and really push plain water into your system (I try to drink 70 ounces a day).
Hi Maria, as Sandra has said - and you realised - Levaquin is a very serious antibiotic. It's a very good thing that you stopped taking it when you did. Do you know what you were given in hospital for the actual sepsis? You only say you were given the Levo after you were released.
The problem with the fluoroquinolones is that they build up a level of toxicity in your body. You should make a note of the names that Sandra gave, and make sure that you NEVER take a fluoroquinolone antibiotic ever again. This is because, even after the tendon aches and other symptoms have passed, you will still have toxins in your body that can be triggered again by just one more tablet.
Also, make sure you don't take a NSAID such as Ibuprofen (Tylenol?), or any steroids such as predisnolone - these can all kick off severe reactions. I know of someone who thought he'd got away with a course of Cipro, but then took one Ibuprofen a few months later and is now in trouble.
I'm not trying to scare you - I'm trying to make sure you stay safe. If you still have tendon aches, try to rest and move with caution - don't exercise as you could make things worse.
