vertigo for 3 months

Can anyone make any suggestions. I have vertigo all the time even when sat down or lying down I feel a sensation of movement. I have always had problems with my sinuses and while on holiday in Spain I had the sensation of getting water in my ear. The ferry home was a 24 hour ferry it was a small boat and the sea was very rough for 12 hours doing that time I vomited uncontrolably. When i got home I noticed I was walking into things and falling over losing my balance. This sensation intensified. The room does not spin but I feel I am walking on matresses and feel as though I am drunk. I have been given some exercises to help correct this. It consists of holding out my thumb and turning my head from side to side whilst focusing on my thumb. This is to bedone for 10 mins 3 times a day. Even before I start these exercises I noticed one of my eyes behaving strangley. Especially if I looked up it would flicker and move uncontrolably. i have not mentioned this to the speacialist yet as i have only seen him once so far. I have had a MRI scan which came back normal. during the test the same eye moved uncontrolably in spasm. I found that when I did the exercises I have been given that my right eye squints and wants to close. This is now happening throughout the day even when I am not doing the exercises. Around my eye has start to feel dumb like i have had a dentists injection. The only time I have had a similar feeling is years ago when I had a virus of the lining of my brain. however i felt a lot more unwell and to move at all was an effort, I also havent told the specialist this yet, but will. As I was wondering since my balance is out of order if it could be a virus in my inner ear. The specialist said it was a disturbance of the inner ear. but he seemed very flipant and didnt seem to grasp the impact it is having on my life. Can anyone else relate to these symptoms. I would really appreciate any help. I was considering asking my GP to give me a blood test?

Sorry to hear you are having a tough time.  Is the specialist from the ENT team?  You need to be seen by ENT, so you can tell them about the numbness around your eye.

Yes the blood tests sound like a good idea to rule things out. My fiend gets BPPV and she says the Epley treatment helps her.  But sometimes it came make the vertigo feeling stronger.

There is the 111 NHS number and they will get a doctor to phone you back to discuss your symptoms. Ive used this number before and it's been helpful.

Thanks for your reply Helen, yes the doctor is on an ENT team he just told me to "get on with my life. I was not going to die."" I felt very insulted as thats what I am trying to do with difficulty.I didnt feel there was any empathy. My Gp tried the epley treatment it didnt really help but I was just greatful to him for trying. I am going to try to speak to my GP to tell him about my eye. I know Im not dying but i would like to feel better soon. It does help to feel I am not alone, so thank you

Well, Unfortune has struck.  It sounds like you have the same thing so many of us on this forum have.  Whether it is called Labyrinthitis (UK doctors prefer this term) or Vestibular neuritis  (US doctors prefer this one), you are getting competing signals from your ear about balance and equilibrium to your brain and it is the cause of all sorts of problems.

I am no doctor, but the symptoms you describe are exactly those of someone who has this condition.  Of course you should get professional attention and learn all you can about your own personal situation and this illness through what ever means possible.

Meanwhile, please try to believe it will lesson over time and unless you get another attack (a virus or bacteria in your inner ear) you will conquer it and life will go on.  Keep a positive outlook and have great patience, because the mental state you keep yourself in will help tremendously in keeping on top of the feeling and it may take a long time to evercome.  There are several meds to keep the nausea down, I used "Cola Syrup".  Others have used Emitrol  and there are pills called Antivert and Meclizine, which amount to a typical antihistamines, which will cause dryness of mouth, nose, and other places that are sensitive to thickening of body fluids.

Please seek the medical groups, but don't feel bad when they can't seem to diagnose it exactly and quickly, after all they are "practicing".
