Just had my 6 week meeting. No x ray, no manipulation. Handed in my crutches. Surgeon looked at the scar said it was fine. I can now drive providing I can do an emergency stop, bend and sleep on my side.
He said there would be a gradual recovery and that still having aches and pains was not unusual just to carry on doing the exercises and walking.
I don't have to go back unless I think something is wrong and I will be sent an xray appointment in 10 months.
It seemed a bit of an anticlimax as I was very nervous.
However I have freedom!
I'm not going to be silly though and still take things gradually.

Well done - I remember my 6 week meet after my hip was pinned 10 years ago. Walked in, took trousers down, checked scar, said all restrictions lifted, trousers pulled up and I was out the door!
Talk about anti-climax (in a good way I guess).
Well done it is like passing a test. No X-ray for either but manipulation and recheck in 4 months with X-ray. No doubt like the rest of us you will have days when you overdo things as one forgets when no pain to remind us. Take care

Yes it was not what I expected. My last one 15 years ago was different. I thought they would do an xray to see that it was ok after the 6 weeks. They must be really confident in the implants now. I suppose I will just have to be patient with the aches and pains. I'm sure I worry more now I'm older.
It's amazing how different each hospital trust is. Since I've still got some aches and pains I will be taking it steadily. I can walk nearly a mile but it does ache afterwards. Although I've handed the crutches in I bought a foldable walking stick. It's got a glow in the dark handle though I don't think I will need to find it in the dark!! Can't wait to sleep on my side tonight!
Hello again Anne. Did you have an X-ray post op? I did so surgeon knew all was well and there unlikely to be movement or shrinking during our healing process. I have to have X-ray in 4 months as movement possible due to state of bones. He will also assess other hip for wasteage. Said it may last 18 months. I am not in pain like some of you but have high risk of fracture

I had an xray a couple of days after the op. It looks weird to see so much metal in both hips! They obviously have different procedures now from the first one. I mentioned a crunch I had heard at about 4 weeks when I was putting more weight on the hip but since it hasn't happened again he didn't seem unduly bothered. It still hurts a bit if I stand just on the operated leg so am taking care coming down stairs. I have to watch my first hip as the plastic liner is wearing a bit but hopefully now I will be able to put less pressure on that one. It's been hard the last few weeks having to rely on it all the time. So far no squeaking from the new ceramic on ceramic one though I've had the odd click now and then. I've got some osteoporosis but no fractures.

I am amazed how different trusts have different guidelines, I had no previous history but was requested to go on the "replacement registery", and must attend for review/xray every year. My 6wk check involved xray's prior to seeing my consultant, she then showed me everything, gave instructions what I could and could not do and said "see you in 12months or sooner if any problems".

I will be careful - I'm still not hoovering or doing the lawn for a couple more weeks. I'll just try to keep up the walking.
Certainly will and I hope all goes well for you at the hosp. When I had the DVT blood test it was less than an hour wait for the result. One of the doctors said the pain could be down to all the manipulation for the op. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Thank you Dot. I was certainly expecting an xray. I will keep a watch out for any odd pains and go back if I'm worried. They may not like to give lots of xrays but it would have been reassuring to have had one and seen the evidence that I'm ok. Those first 6 weeks are so stressful!
Your trust seem to be taking a lot of care if you have to have xrays every year. I think for my first one 15 years ago I had one at 6weeks and 1 at a year and that was it.
Thank you for your reply, I did work in the trust since 1983 but don't think that has anything to do with being on the register. What I was told was its a national initative to monitor prosthetic's and that I would never be discharged as I would be monitored for life and need seeing/xray every year. I also had to agree and sign to go on the register. Again, I am taken aback how different it is dependent on your post code.

I've never heard of a register to monitor prosthetics - perhaps some trusts are more involved in it than others - or perhaps they were interested in particular types of implant. Thanks for the chat offer Dot x

Mine like yours - a quick 10 min chat by physio to 6 of us, handing in crutches, not able to also hand in raised loo seat so took to recycling councill depot, quick 5 min one to one with phsysio re sex, exercise and walking briskly. that's all.
yea, a bit boring , but feel tis another hurdle passed!

You may have filled in a form and not been aware. I was given mine in the form of a questionnaire at my pre op assessment. It is also a good place to look for surgeons as their activity and contributions are registered

All my equipment like trolley, perching stool, loo seats etc go back when I think I don't need them. I just ring up and they will come and collect!
