Hi all, it's been a while since iv been on here, but just an update had my THR on 25/7 and went back to work 2 weeks ago.stiil sore when I sit and then get up to walk but hopefully that will pass, but what I find strange is when I try a brisk walk my left foot (the operated side) seems to wonder all over the place. Has anybody else found this? I was hoping to get back to gym but I couldn't go on treadmill like this
I haven't actually experienced this but I seem to remember reading about someone else on this site who has. I'm sure someone will be able to help you.
Cheers Stella I thought so too
Hi, I think you need to revisit your GP. You either need more physio or perhaps you have a small degree of nerve damage. Hope you get the help you need but don't just accept it. They don't seem to offer physio unless you tell them that you are not happy with your progress.
Hi: after my first THR in 2007, this happened to me. My foot seemed to have a mind of its own. A very odd and disturbing experience.
In my case, it was, indeed, part of a larger problem of nerve damage. Despite years of consultations and investigations, professionals claimed they were unable to explain it, nor could they come up with any effective treatment/intervention to alleviate the severe pain I was in.
The condition has eased somewhat, over the years, but it seems I just have to live with it.
This, of course, might not be the case for you. There is a recognised 'risk' called 'foot drop', which could well be what you're experiencing.
I'd definitely go back to your consultant, who should initiate tests.
Good luck to you!
Elaine
I agree with you Debbie, unless you ask for help you won't be offered it. I left hospital with a couple of pages of exercises to do and that was it. No physio follow up. I've now taken it upon myself to walk as much as possible and to go to the pool for some very gentle swimming (I was advised not breast stroke yet though). I hope you get the help you need.
Thanks elaine
Thanks debbie
Hi Crossy. I have been wondering how you were getting on. We had our surgery on the same day. You seem to be doing well apart from the foot problem. Good that you are back at work. I have had a few problems with various aches, pains and weakness and was a bit fed up with it all so decided to phone the hospital physio for advice. She agreed to see me and has been giving me strengthening exercises and deep tissue massage which I think is helping. Just a thought that maybe this is a route you could go down? The hospital physio has acces to your surgical notes and to your surgeon should advice be needed. Good luck and keep in touch.
Good to here from you hippiechic glad your doing reasonably well, I'm still struggling a bit with pain in my groin, but more worried about my foot. I think il take the advice and go to the Physio which I was never offered
My pain is mainly buttock and sitting makes it worse, also groin pain. Thought I would be further on by this time but I guess it takes time. Physio definitely helping. Still not getting great sleeps. Hope you get your problem sorted out. X
Same here Hippiechic, I have a sciatica-like pain right in my buttock. Fortunately it doesn't travel down my leg but it's just there - like toothache in the bum! Now I'm sleeping on my side I am sleeping better than on my back but still waking with pain in the operated leg. I think the muscles sort of seize up at night as I don't get any pain (except the bum pain) during the day.
Crossybelfast, really hope your problem gets sorted soom.
Stella x
Hi Stella. It really is a pain in the bum:-(. That is where I am having the deep tissue massage from the physio. Very painful when she is doing it but definitely eases off afterwards.
Having computer problems so didn't finish last post. Also having exercises to help. Thinks it may be coming from my back.
O I agree with Elaine ... Most likely case of drop foot. Unlucky if it is, but as you read here it us possible to live with it and it may not bother you so much in time. Just one more of possible end results. It's awful to read that things can go on developing and revealing themselves so long after our original surgeries. I'm just about in the clear but get days when I just have to do nothing, so wary am I of any tweaks and twinges...
I will bear deep tissue massage in mind. Today the bum pain is almost non-existant so I'm going to give the exercises and swimming a chance and if that doesn't cure it I'll get some massage. Like you I think it's my back that is the problem and not my hip. I've had a bad back for many, many years (slipped disc and laminectomy when I was 18) and I think all that trying to sleep on my back hasn't helped.
I have problems replying on the forum from my Samsung tablet, it freezes up and does strange things. I've found it much quicker to reply on the laptop but that's not always switched on! I think it's something to do with the adverts that pop up on the site - Adobe Flash Player doesn't always work on tablets (well, not mine anyway!).
Hope things improve for you soon. x
This was my pain also HippiechicUK, butt pain, and it really hurt. Stella describes it perfectly like a toothach on the bum. I often wonder if some of us get more pain or less pain in the butt based on if our hip joint was cemeted or not cemented. The one thing that helped me was Volterene cream, I would rub that on my butt and it did help a lot to relieve the pain.
I came to realize that most likely I had been suffering with a bad hip for 15 to 20 years maybe. Previoously I had worked in IT and sat in front of a computer for long, long, long stretches at a time, like many times I would work 24 hours straight, and I always suffered from butt pain. I would have to use pillows etc, and now that I think back on it it was mainly on that one side, the same side where I got my hip replaced.
I realized after my THR and the tremendous butt pain I had, it was simply a stronger version of the butt pain I had been experiencing for decades. Even now almost 6 months later I still have mild butt pain if I sit to long but of course it is much much less than before. As for your groin pain I hope you don't have iliopsoas tendinitis. By reading these forums I have figured out that groin pain is either iliopsoas tendinitis or nerve damage. If you stay off your feet and lay down rather than sit iliopsoas tendinitis can heal up after about 3 weeks, IF you catch it early. Unfortunately the longer tendonitis goes on not healing, the more and more chance you have of ti being a perment condition that will never heal. If I were in your place I would be very concerned about the foot and see my doctor not jsut a physical therapist.
Thanks Stella. Agree that starting with exercise and swimming. Wouldn't have massage unless VERY sure the person knew what she was doing (could do more harm than good). This is the physio from the ward I had my surgery in. She has been in contact with my surgeon too and combining it with exercise. Good luck with the swimming and exercise.x
