Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone else experienced pain/tenderness in their lower leg following surgery? I had a huge bruise running the length of my shin after surgery and although the bruise has gone it is still very tender and sore to touch! My calf muscle is also very tender but I kind of expected that! Is this normal?
Hi karen
I have some tenderness in the lower leg but my problem is my foot feeling sore, achy and shooting pains like needles. I've had tests for dvt but they have come back clear. I feel it's a nerve problem. I don't know of anyone else having this problem and doctors keep telling me it's too soon to tell. It will be 6 weeks on Wednesday does anyone else have this problem

Hi Karen,
โYes I am still experiencing tenderness at the back of my thigh - op leg. It does bother me in that it affect my sleep and as you described it is very tender to touch bordering on sore and numb. Today is day 13 from the day of my op. I will address this with my GP a wel as other things im experiencing.
โI do think it is normal but im just not sure how long one should still be experiencing them.
โHow far in your recovery are you?
I'll be 4 weeks on Wednesday. Thought the tender/sore feeling would be better by now though!
Karen, I remember my calf being extremely sore for at least a month post-surgery. That bruise that was down your shin sounds like it was awful. It would seem quite possible that, even with the bruise on the outside gone, the inside would still be healing and painful. Hopefully this will resolve in time!
Hi y'all,
Well, as you may know by now, THR is major surgery where a lot of serious manipulation and sometimes force is being used to dislocate the hip ... ouch !!!
it could be that you were grabbed by your calf - I had a print of hand on my thigh - at 2nd THR I asked surgeon to handle me with more care and I think he did ..
If you are ready for it, the live video shown on you tube is amazing - not for the weak of stomach - there is also a animated, virtual video which shows you what is invoved in this "procedure"
So it is normal - if you are really worried, please have it checked by your doctor -
in the meantime, be very gentle with yourself
big warm hug

As long as it's bruising, and not DVT, then it's OK. There can be a lot of bruising, the operation is very brutal, having your most powerful muscles pulled about in order to dislocate that hip joint.
Best wishes

I kep having shooting pains in my shins and ankles but they just seem to shoot up and down.my op will be 3 weeks tomorrow.I just assume this is normal being what we have been through.
Hi Karen,
I had bruising all the way down my leg and my ankle too. Even though the bruising has almost gone, the muscles still feel sore and tender to touch. I think it is normal so please dont worry. Like others have said, the surgery is brutal. God knows what they have doing to us during surgery ha! The bruising on my foot doesnt seem to be shifting for some reason, its still blue!
Iv also had compressed nerve pain in my right thigh. It goes hot and pins and needles, then shooting pains start. Anyone else have this?

Hi Karen
Both my calves and shins were tender after my op, for some reason! I started to worry about dvt, especially with the tenderness in my calves so I went to my GP to get it checked out. He measured both calves and they were the same size, swelling is a sign. Redness and heat is also a sign of dvt but it's not always apparent. My GP also asked if standing on my tiptoes was painful, it wasn't but I'm assuming that is also something that they look out for.
If you're concerned, please go to your GP. Being at home recuperating gives you plenty of time to worry about things.

Thanks for the reassurance Dawn. I'm now sure it's just tenderness from op - as others have said its a pretty brutal thing for your leg to go through!!! Also, there's no heat or redness and I can stand on ties with no pain. I'm so glad I joined this forum - I think I'd be a basket case by now!!!
Thanks again to everyone ๐Xx
