Vision extremely blurry 6 weeks after scleral buckle surgery for retinal detachment

Six weeks ago, I had scleral buckle surgery for a macula-off retinal detachment (no gas bubble was used, just the scleral buckle). I originally went to the doctor because I woke up one day and had a “curtain” on my left eye (i.e., I could not see the top part of the field of vision), but other than that, my visual acuity/sharpness in the eye was completely fine.  I had the surgery within 7 days of first noticing the “curtain.”  Prior to surgery, I had 20/20 vision in both eyes (without glasses).

Now, post-surgery, my vision is extremely blurry in my surgery eye. When I do the eye test at my doctor’s office, the vision in my left eye is 20/400 or worse – I can see hands and fingers, but I can’t really even make out the biggest letter on the vision chart, plus I have some visual distortion.

Have others experienced extreme blurriness after scleral buckle surgery? And, if so, did it improve over time?

does eyeglasses len with high diopter help in that eye? scleral buckle elongates your eye, causes myopia. i have a friend who had macula-off retinal detachment but she’s operated in 6 hours (vitrectomy with gas bubble). she said straight lines look wavy.

I haven’t gotten a prescription yet for that eye because my eye is still healing, and optometrist says I need a contact instead of glasses (since my non-surgery eye is 20/20). However, when I have tested lenses at the optometrist, my vision does improve, but I do have a fair amount of distortion (i.e. straight lines look wavy). Has that improved for your friend at all? I’m also curious if your friend’s visual acuity/sharpness has continued to improve since surgery. Thanks!
