I had a cataract surgery 3 weeks ago in my left eye. There was a slight inflammation when I went to the surgery. Surgeon had said it was not going to have any affect. I had a mono-focal J&J lens for distance vision put in. After the surgery I recovered after 2/3 days. My vision was great after a week. I was seeing things sharp. Then I noticed the sharpness go down. My distance vision has gone worse. I have trouble seeing road signs. I had visited the doctor again and she had a look and said everything looked fine. On the reading tests for distance, my vision had gone a bit worse. Doctor says it will take some time to settle down and once I have prescription glasses I will see better. I have been also using drops for dry eyes 4 times a day. What concerns me it that I was seeing really well after a week before it got worse. Is it possible for the vision to get worse after seeing better?
Yes, I think that is possible. The eye swells up from the trauma of the surgery and the pressure inside the eye may remain high for a while. They should be checking pressure at each visit so you could ask how it has changed over time. In any case the shape and power of the eye will be impacted. It may make vision better or worse. It is recommended that you wait 6 weeks before considering that it is stable and prudent to get an eyeglass prescription that will be stable.

Years ago when I was diagnosed with diabetes and put on a medication that quickly reduces the blood glucose back to normal, I noticed that my vision changed a lot. I was myopic and all of a sudden I could see distance quite well, and certainly better than when I had my glasses on. I was so worried I saw my optometrist. He told me that the rapid blood glucose change would impact the pressure in my eye temporarily and that is what would cause the vision to change due to the impact on the shape of the eye. He said it was not worth it to change the prescription because the effect would be temporary. Sure enough, he was right, and after a week or so I went back to being significantly myopic and my existing glasses were just fine.
Actually, the pressure has been quite normal (about 16) all through. I will wait and see. Thank you.
