Vitamin C

Can i take extra vitimin c , and how much as John has got a very bad cough and cold, no he nots grumbling bless him. thought i might make chicken souwith lpots of garlic and ginger.

Weather not to good today windy and rain, so much for spring,

Margaret, my hubby has worked part-time in a school for years since retiring from his full time job.  After a few colds in as many months, he started taking Zinc with Vitamin C, and has been cold-free for years.  Of course, you would need to check with the pharmacist for any interaction with the steroids.

Chicken soup/broth with garlic and ginger is said to be an excellent remedy for colds and flu - however, don't add the garlic until about to serve otherwise the beneficial allicin will be lost.  Whenever I have been in close contact with anyone with a cold, I have returned home and had a piece of toast with a clove of fresh garlic crushed into the butter - yummy and protective....and so far it has always worked.  Manuka honey, of course, will help to boost your own immune system.  Separate beds whilst hubby is coughing and sneezing may help.  Hope he feels better soon and you don't succumb.  Good luck, Margaret!

thank you MrsO i thought you might come up with something for me,

There is no proof extra vit C makes any difference - except to highly trained athletes where it does! You can't overdose on vit C though - you get rid of it all through the kidneys which is why you need it daily.

You may not get it though - I have had far fewer colds since being on pred! I'm not the only one.

thank you Eileen.

Eileen i keep getting strange feelings across my forehead and at the temple on my left and right side, also across my face and nose is this just normal, i have told doctor about the other times i got it on my right temple, also my neck has been very swollen, i took my preds at 8.45 so i know they have not kicked in, sorry for asking but this is a new feeling.

We honestly can't make that sort of statement Margaret I'm afraid - you may have got a bug, the same one your husband has, just it is affecting you differently. My daughter gets swollen glands whenever she gets a cold, I get nothing at all. We are all different and have different ways of our illnesses coming out. What did the GP say before?

Do try to stop worrying about every experience you have because that just makes you more anxious and even more aware of the littlest change. If you get a really severe headache, your sight is affected, feel ill - then go back to the doctor asap - but noone can diagnose on the internet.
