Vitamin suppliment

I read an article that one should stop taking vitamin suppliment a week before surgery. I'm taking vitamin e, fish oil, ginseng which are on NOT to take list.

Couldnt see these infos in my recovery pack.

Yes, stop taking all supplements, vitamins included as well as aspirin products. They can thin your blood.  I've had 26 surgeries since 2006, so I'm well aware of what has to be stopped a week to 10 days before your surgery.  Good luck on your surgery.

There's no scientific evidence to support any benefits from taking supplements.

A healthy balanced diet which includes fish, fruit and vegetables should provide all the nutrients we need.

However for those who think supplements benefit them they probably won't do any harm either.

Each to their own.

A couple of weeks before my surgery I had to take everything I was taking to the pre-op appointment and they told me what to stop taking and how long before the surgery I needed to stop. Fish oil was one of them, I think I had to stop taking it a week before the surgery. I stopped taking everything to be safe. I was not on any prescription meds. I was also taking a Whey protein drink with BCAA for muscle recovery and ester-c which heals the bones and tissue.  I was told I could continue taking my supplements when I got home.

Good luck with your surgery.

I really am petrified but at the same time I can't wait as the pain is really getting me down . I was forced to resign from my job three months ago and the pain and discomfort seem to be getting worse.

Thank you.

I hope your surgery is soon.  Just keep thinking that the pain and discomfort will go away.  Well, what you have will go away, but you have new pain and discomfort ... but that will be temporary.  Keep asking for pain pills!   Don't wait until the pain is too bad; keep taking the pain meds at least every four hours until the pain is subsiding.

Thanks you. I definitely will explore on the protein drink and ester c . Never herd it before.

I'm glad I found this forum so good to exchange information

It's on 26th of this month. Not too long!

I'm having my hip replacement replaced on the 27th.  I'll be thinking of you. (My surgeon put in the wrong size.  I have a very wide hip bone/femur neck ... and their supplier only carries narrow parts!  Here's something to ask your surgeon when you go in for your pre-op:  what size is your femur neck ... he can measure from the X-ray ... and what size is he putting in.  I would never have known that I needed to know what size bones I have.  But you have to be your own advocate.)

Good advice Lynn..but many surgeons and GPs would think you were mad asking technical questions like that..and you probably wouldn't get an answer anyway.

They are the experts and use whatever implant they see fit.

Either way how would you know which implant they had used?

Apparentely there are thousands of different implants available.

Its down to the surgeon to decide what's best for you.

There aren't that many manufacturers of hip replacement parts.  Some of those only carry two sizes:  127 and 132 degrees.  Seriously!  Some have modular/adjustabale parts.   I needed 146 degree.  My surgeon's supplier only carried the two sizes, and my surgeon can only use that supplier.  Doctors may be experts, but their wallet is the most important. You can ask to see the X-ray and the surgeon can measure the femur neck on the screen.  I'm supposedly rare as far as my wide neck.  But there are probably thousands of THR patients who have a limb length discrepancy, presumbly because they got the wrong size, but didn't know to ask the right questions before the surgery.  (My surgical leg is 1-1/2" shorter than the other and as a result, the rest of my body is messed up.)

So I take it from that you were fitted with an incorrect implant?

Surely they should stock more than two sizes? If the ones they had weren't right for you then surely they should get the correct one from another supplier!  You wouldn't fit an incorrect part on a motor vehicle!

if your leg descrepancy was caused by using the incorrect parts, then that is absolutely shocking..

But Can you actually prove this though?

Yes, I was fitted witih an incorrect implant.

No, they only stock two sizes.  That's all their supplier makes, and that's all they have to use.  They can't go to another supplier.  Their solution is to get my shoe built up.  I think manufacturers should make multiple sizes, like shoes come up a multitude of sizes.

It is shocking.

And yes, I can prove it. I can't go into details on a public chatroom. Maybe in a year or so I can spell it out.

Lynne go to _________

where it states that there are between 10k-100k types of implants currently available..an excellent read btw.

with a range of cup head sizes ranging from 22.5mm to 60mm.

That must give surgeons a fair bit of room for fine tuning to fit the particular patients needs.

I have been to my pre op class last week. I only saw the occupational therapist .She can't be able to answer some of the questions I asked..e.g size of the femur neck they will be implanting, the surgery techniques they will be using etc, etc. Her advise was to get in touch with the surgeon secretary for advise. Otherwise my next visit will be the day of the surgery.

I will be thinking of you. With the grace of the Lord I'm sure it will be a success for both of us.

It's a good idea to call the surgeon's medical assistant, although she/he probably won't know.  She/he will have to ask the surgeon to measure your femur neck from the X-ray.

God will be there with both of us!

Since your link was removed, use the Private Message service as noted above.  I'd like to see the link.  When I looked up all the hip replacement manufacturers, there weren't that many.  And each only made a few sizes.  10k-100k seems a lot.

The cup size is apparently irrelavant. And my surgeon's manufacturer only makes a few sizes of heads.  It's the neck size that affected me.

Thank you.

I had my blood panel done and results were "great" to quote my surgeon, so I asked his nurse, why would I stop taking my daily vitamins when my blood is thick and well suited for surgery? Her answer, "They can be blood thinning." she said.  Well, if they were, my blood would be thin, right?  So, I guess it is a personal decision. Our med students do NOT study but one quarter during med school to learn about vitamins and nutrition. But whatever you do, Definitely no aspirin based products, no NSAIDS or Glucosomine/Chondroitan supplements. I stayed on my Vit C, D3, K2 and E. K2 actually thickens your blood as do leafy greens in your diet such as kale, broccoli and salad greens.

They don't want your blood any thinner than it normally is.  They're going to be cutting you open!  You could lose too much blood if it's too thin.
