Hi all,
does anyone vomit during 'coughing up the gunk?' I do about once a month and cannot work out why as I do the same exercised each day!

Hi little wolf. I do sometimes but not as often you do, I find it happens if i,m really congested, I think we cough so much it makes us reach then makes us vomit. Have you spoken to your chest consultant about it? Keep well 😊😊

Thinking through your problem..
I would try 'huffing' as opposed to coughing,
If I am lying on my back, with my feet raised...a gentle slope, I just rest for about 5/10 minutes and the 'gunk' comes up in small amounts, it just gurgles up without any effort on my part, and with a little help from huffing and a gentle cough,you shouldn't have a problem. After trying all the techniques advised, flutter, etc, this works best for me.
Also, wait until around 20 minutes after a meal, give food a chance to settle.
This is what I have worked out, and of course everyone is different, but try it and let us all know. I find the secret is to 'tell' the stuff to come up...talk to your body and let it know what you want it to do...talk to your lungs...imagine a vacume cleaner...anything...it works for me. Most important is to relax, don't force anything.
Also Joy's advice is good, get it checked out as well...
The best way I have found to do p/drainage is to do it on an empty stomach. Lie on one side at a time then last of all on my back I usually get a nice slope from my sofa resting my head on a cushion on the floor. Also if you do it daily the sputum does not get too thick and this makes it easier to cough up.
Another thing is make it a relax time, I usually read the TV times or something and the sputum seems to come up easier without much effort. I have been doing it for 35 years now.
