Waiting for hip replacement

Ten  years ago I had my R hip replaced, now quite quickly the L has got very painful and needs replacing. Just had the appointment for pre op checks so not too long to wait now.   But what is worrying me is that the original hip dislocated 3 months post op, and then again 6 weeks after that, necessitating a revision. I am extremely worried that the same thing will happen again. Do you think  that in the intervening ten years surgery has improved?   My surgeon knows all about my fears, so do you think I’m worrying for nothing?

Also, the knee on that side is very painful, I’m hoping it’s just a referred pain?

I can hardly walk and feel so down.

I guess you will be super careful postop with restrictions, hopefully your surgeon will be able to create a nice stable joint which won’t dislocate. Good luck and try not to worry as it may not happen this time. Do your pre-had exercises to get those muscles as strong as possible

Hi Lucie

Really sorry to hear your feeling down about it all, I do believe every single one of us completely understands how you feel.

This time round you know how you will feel after surgery better than most of us.

Of course after 10 years surgery should have moved on, are you having a different surgeon? Did you have any other issues with the first op? X

Lucie,

I am very close (5/29) to my first hip replacement.  I have been assured that dislocation is not as likely as it was years ago. I can see where you would be fearful having it happen again as I understand it is extremely painful. My knee is painful as well and is trying to compensate for my hip.

Best of luck with your surgery.

Hi Bridget, thanks, don’t know about exercises, I’m hardly able to walk.  My love is going to town shopping, window shopping etc. If someone gave me £500 to get to town and spend it, I don’t know if I could.  The Pain wakes me up, such long days to get through.

Hopefully not too long to wait now.
