waiting for second tkr

I had my first new knee in April last year and was due to have my other one done in Oct/Nov last year. I am still waiting despite several phone calls to my consultants secretary. I have been told I am on the list but it's a very

long one. I am now in considerable pain which is getting worse. My bad leg keeps locking and I nearly fall when this happens. I didn't have this with

the other one and I am now frightened of going out on my own. Consequently this is getting me down and I am just living each day waiting for the

Postman or a call from the hospital. Sorry to go on but I wondered if

Anyone else is waiting like me. X

Oh yes. I was on the infamous list for over two years at our city health care centre. After a year plus I found a new surgeon about 2 hrs away and the wait was 8 months. Got it done on Dec 5. Waiting now for # 2 in 6-12 months. I still haven't heard from my city's. Craziness here in Nova Scotia, Canada for wait lists espec for knees and hips.

Oh that sounds terrible .... I would be ringing the consultant every day.  That's not good enough that you now feel that you can't go out.  Hope you get sorted out sooner rather than later. Xx

I live in shrops UK and although it was a dedicated orthopaedic hospital I was cancelled twice and when I contacted the booking clerk I learned I was classed as 'routine' not urgent. So contacted the Patient Liaison Service who got me reclassed as urgent because had i had deteriorated so much while waiting. This speeded things up a lot and got my op within 6 weeks. Do you have anything like that available where you live?hope you can get sorted very soon!!

Thanks for that Tess will give it a try. I live in Lancashire. I

have definitely deteriorated. Need to get in soon.x

You definitely do need to be forceful Joan. Good luck and I hope you get some good news soon. Xx

Hi, sorry to hear you're having a rough time.

You definitely need to contact PALS, the Patient Advice Liaison Service - every hospital should have one - and they should be able to help. As far

as I am aware, you have the right to treatment within 13 weeks off the decision to perform surgery, and there are options you can take if your .

Hospital is unable to fulfil that obligation. Give them a call or e-mail, I've had to use them and found them to be very helpful.

Hope you get it sorted soon xx

You've probably tried it already but have you tried telling them that you can attend at short notice and would accept a cancellation. My first op was brought forward due to a cancellation and even though I had to postpone my second one, and was told in doing so, I might have to work a few months, I had it less than 2 weeks after my initial date.

Hope you get a date soon!

If you can get the person you speak to on the phone on your side, this helps - so stay friendly but also definitely firm!! Most people are very compassionate and want to help...the very best of luck and a good result for you!

Hi Joan bad news about long waiting list, just keep pestering them you should not be left in pain. All the best.

I totally agree ..... friendly but forceful is the way forward. Fingers crossed that you get a date soon. 💐

Yes I have told them I would take a cancellation. I am going

Into a private hospital on the NHS and said I would go into

any hospital too.

That's the trouble the secretary is so nice and keeps saying

She understands how I must be feeling. She has also given

me her direct phone number.

At least she sounds like she is on your side!
