hi just letting ye know that on my local newspaper here in cork ireland the waiting list to just see the consultant here in cork city (second biggest city in republic of ireland) is 7,197 as i say just to see the consultant and god knows how long after that before you are given the op crazy or what ??? this is why private health insurance is so important .and another reason why the premiums are through the roof here i hope your countries are better run !!!!
What is 7.197. Is that months or years?!!!
I'm presuming Linda means people!
Oh I see thanks I had not thought of that. Getting a bit late in the evening for my brain to work!!
Sarah
sorry for not being clear its 7,197 people on the waiting list in cork city to see a consultant for the first visit so you can imagine if your knee is in trouble and you dont have private health insurance and you go to the doctor to be put on the list for consultant and you find out that there are 7,197 people before you on the list on the public list !! i think there is only 4 or maybe 5 consultants on the lists so its a long wait and once you get to see one then you go on another list to get op and that coulg be equaly as long
So Pam was right, should have thought of that myself.
Yes that is a long list.
I waited 10 months from going to GP being referred to consultant, see consultant and having TKR.

!t's reasonabIy quick over here once you have seen a specialist, and if you are not operated within six months, they will send you to a private hospital . . . . but as you say, it's getting to see the specialist in the first place which takes time. I wanted to see the orthopaedic surgeon, and it would have taken me about 15 months, just to see him. ended up having it done privately, but that way you get no phsyiotherapy unless re prepared to go to the centre they insist on, which was a forty minute drive, and no parking. . . but I'm glad we have private insurance, one of the conditions of becoming resident in Spain for a Briton thirty years ago (not sure now!) . . Not cheap, but with our multiple problems it's turned out to be a good investment!
I was referred 6th jan 15. Saw consultant at wrightington 9th feb and was offered Tkr. op date 14th April which was cancelled due to hrt and had op 19th may So was 4 and month from referral to op and would have been 3 and half if it hadn't needed to be cancelled and I can't thank them enough. Im now 6 week Post op and my life has been transformed Ive Just come off crutches and looking forward to the future
I was refered from trauma to orthopaedics on 3rd September 2015 and had TKR 1st October I waited 27 days. Im doing everything now, going to the gym walking doing the allotment
Dont you know someone in Northern Ireland?? cheeky but worth a tray
That is a frightening statistic. Did they follow up with any numbers on the actual surgeries done in a calendar year? Where in the middle part of the US you can figure a couple of months max from beginning to surgery date. Our system eliminates the consultant. We start out with a primary care do who refers you to the orthopedic surgeon for evaluation. He of course is the whack, chop and sew guy. The hospital has its approved anesthetic practices as well as specialists. Each practice does its own billing. If you at 63rd on the senior insurance program (Medicare) you can bypass the primary care guy and source out your own provider in any descipline. We pay our own premiums and can shop the market. There are a lot of little twists and turn but to some degree, everone over 65 has some level of insurance.
O' Linda...that's awful...Wow!! Just read all these posts...I'm in Australia...I was referred to private Orthapaedic surgeon within 2 weeks I told him that I needed to go public for the op..it took me 6 weeks...unreal how long you have to wait just to see a specialist...if that happened here it would be all over the papers and TV..,and I live in a very small state too..there is only about 700,00 people who live hear..the mainland looks at us as the backwater!!! thank God for this little piece of backwater!! be blessed,do hope the waiting gets better for you ...:-) xxx
This was at the RVI Newcastle UK
yes it is frightening i have no idea hoe many op preformed here per calender year the population of cork would be about a half a million ,the system is not working here thats for sure privately i could be done within 3 mths public it could be as long as 5yrs from start to finish third world or what !!!!!!!!! we are a joke thats for sure our government have unbelieveable wages our main man earns more than O BAMA and we are a tiny country with population of 3 and a half million ,its so unfair to see so many people not getting ops when they need it while our fat cats government pay themselves crazy wages ... wow that felt good to get that off my chest !!!!! .....
well thank god i had private insurance and have had my op but i see so many people i know that are on the waiting lists in terrible pain .unfortunatly we seem to put up with it you are all so lucky to live where you are and have great systems in place thanks for yer answers
that was really fast its the way it should be its great you are doing so well i hope the crops are coming on !!!
your so lucky to get it done so quick and fantastic your doing so well
I know exactly how you feel! the Lord Mayor of Lanzarote, a tiddly little island in the middle of the Atlantic, and unfortunately a distant relative of my hubby, was actually earning more that margaret Thatcher when she was Prime Minister of the UK. He had FIVE jobs, all of them in an official capacity, and on top of that ended up in jail for 'misappropriating' (in other words, stealing. . .) public funds. Even while in prison, he apparently went on running the island through his political colleagues. Meanwhile, of course, there was no money for social services etc. . . .
That's brilliant. Iv just rang gym today as I had membership frozen and I go back next week for first time since last October ! Can't wait. Can only go on bike cross trainer. And leg lift without the weights at first but it's a start plus I can go in the pool. I'm hoping in a couple if week I can maybe join Pilates class too it will be so good to get back into the swing of things as me and daughter in law used to go 5 nights a week then I dwindled due to leg pain then in oct she fell and broke leg in three places which was a blow as she used to run marathons !!! She's back in training now so hopefully his year we can both get fit again x
I started with bike 10 mins once I got my bend I now do 20 mins ith '8' resistance. Then a few strides on the cross trainer ( I call it the slidy one) now doing 10 mins with '10' resistance I use do use the leg lift and pushback but only as many as its ok I do all the upper body weights.
The crops in the allotment got off to a slow start. Carrots, beets, leeks, onions, shallots. chard, cabbage brussels, peas, beans, rhubarb, potatoes, gooseberries and blackcurrants and have just doubled the size of the allotment so hubby & I (well mostly him) are building a shed.
I know the feeling not to be able to run We did marathons then it dwindled off with knee pain now of course its gone
