Not easy trying to change type of employment; I left school and worked in surveyors office for the summer as an office junior, then pre-nursing course for a year, then clerical assistant with telecommunications board (using early VDU with keyboards inputting data) where I stayed until after I was married and had kids. First born was a nightmare, only slept a few hours in any 24, in the end gad hernia op and needed bowel surgery to widen narrow bowel.
Hubby couldn't cope at all with him do I had to give my job up. Returned to work eventually and had to take evening work cleaning theatres, then night shifts in a care home. Went Back to college part-time (Did some computer courses, got bookeeping certificates, and re-sat Higher English), while working part-time -various jobs working as dental assistant, sales assistant in jewellers, finally stayed with dry cleaners longer term while at university got my social science degree with honours in politics and economics.
Intended to do nursing again but wanted to do midwifery but couldn't get into local Glasgow uni... was offered trainin in different area of nursing in Stirling but hubby wouldn't move house, I don't drive and still had a dependent at home.
Anyhow my mother was diagnosed with cancer by then and I left dry cleaners no-one available to do school run. Did an Avon round for 4 years made enough to cover my loss of wages and pay my NI contributions.
Spent all these years trying to get back into office work, I even got a distinction in my bookkeeping (did Manuel and computerised using accounts packages), but still got no-where.
One of my daughters who struggled through school only got a foundation in maths, basic English and no accounts. Left school did hairdressing training, is now working for Arnold Clark motors in the accounts department in hire drive and chasing big money that companies and working on the accounts. Despite being hardly able to count!
Having said that I lovey job where I get to talk and interact with lots of different and very lovely people. I I know that I would hate being stuck in a stuffy office, when I was doing my Avon round I did volunteering in the office at our Marie currie centre for a few hours every week for 2 years and I loved that.
Don't know why it's so difficult to get back in to office based work once you exit that sector.
Good luck with your search, hope you are more successful than I've been.
