I am still awaiting for a date for both my pre op and my surgery. I just wondered how long people are waiting in Scotland on the NHS.
I have now waited over 12 months. Getting a bit fed up now.
How long have you waited??

That is ridiculous, I live in California. Two weeks for Dr’s appt, then 5 weeks for surgery date.
I waited a year. But we don't pay for the surgery, so worth the wait for me.
I know it varies by area, but that seems excessive to me. I was lucky and took the opportunity to go to a private hospital on the NHS.
That is a ridiculous amount of time to wait. Have you spoken to whoever's in charge of the operating waiting list (this is NOT the surgeon)? Are you aware that you can ask to swap to a surgeon with a shorter waiting list?
If you don't have the correct phone number, then post on here the name of the hospital you're going to and I'm sure that someone on this forum will know the number.
I was lucky with both my THRs - I only waited 5 weeks for my first op and 3 months for the second.
Good luck.
If you're referring to having the op on the NHS, then yes we do pay for the surgery (that's what the NIC is for) just not at the point of service.
I have opted to go anywhere in scotland for my surgery. I have rang the hospital on several occasions only to be told that the waiting list is very long and yes people are waiting over a year. Certainly no guide lines are being adhered to.
I am just so fed up now but I will struggle on.
Best wishes
I saw my consultant in may got my preop date 6 weeks ago for august 29th but was told the op could be up to 18 weeks after that i spoke to his Secretary as when i saw the consultant he said it would be at the end of summer hence preop aug ,she said she was annoyed as they are giveing people unrealistic timescales as my name is well down the list and she said my op will not be this side of 2018 😪 i said well what happens about my preop that appears to be a waste of time and she said i will have another after 18 weeks then wait again 🤔😫😤
I had been on the waiting list to see the consultant since August 2017. Saw her in May and was told i’d have my surgery within 12 weeks as the longest waiting time is to actually see the consultant. I am waiting with for a letter for my pre op, then my surgery. I was led to believe that the pre op is done only a couple of weeks before surgery.
That is ridiculous that you had ur pre op so early. Surely they are wasting time and money having to do more than one pre op. Which hospital was this at?
Hi Lal,
Your wait from being put on the list to seeing the consultant was about the same as mine but, after seeing consultant I had op about 7 weeks later, I am ìn north wales. Before the op, there was the pre op, joint school and a validation class.
I know its crazy i was hoping to get it all out of the way at the end of summer ,im with james cook at Middlesbrough, so will just have to wait and see at the preop if anythings different i said same as you total waste of time and money if thats tge case hope you hear something soon 🤞🤞
Hi Jen,
i’m glad U got ur surgery not long after ur pre op.
I think in scotland they tend to do everything at the pre op appointment and then only a short wait for ur surgery after that.
Hopefully that is the case as my patience is beginning to run out!!
Hope you get your op soon lal, have you said you are able to take a cancellation, if one comes up.
I o ly paid my deductible, which I had pretty much used up by the time of surgery. Coverage at PPO hospital was 100%.
We can get that too in UK if we do it on insurance or pay privately, but not on the NHS when we do not pay.
It used to be NHI contributions but they dropped the H so the Health bit is not quite true any more. They are now talking about an extra tax to pay for the NHS. They seem to have forgotten that used to be the case in the good old days.
I think I waited ten weeks between pre op and surgery. If it had been over twelve weeks I would have had to have another pre op.
I'm in Canada. In a round a bout way...we pay. But not the "sell my firstborn, in debt for life" kind of way some poor folks in other countries I know have to.
Good. I was saying I waited a year... but I was ok with it. I'm grateful.
.....in response to the question.
Hi Jen,
yes I have said I will take an cancellation and go to any hospital in scotland.
