10 Days post THR does anyone know the distance i can walk without doing myself any harm
hi, walk as much as you can that is comfortable. everyone’s recovery is different. I went out every day from about day 6 post op and each day walked a bit further (remember you have to walk home again). My physio said that the only limit is what I put on myself really and what feels right for me. listen to what your body says, if you feel ok then you are doing great! Main thing is to make sure you walk tall and straight.
I had my twenty year old THR revised eighteen months ago and can easily do six mile plus walks at a brisk pace without stopping. Cheers Richard
If it hurts, you did too much.
After my first THR, I was just doing short walks outside (car park to hospital, around supermarket whilst holding on to the trolley).
After my revision last year I did a mile outside in less than a week.
I used Google Maps to work out some circular walks around our home, and gradually increased the distances and times. Always take a mobile phone so you can summon help or a taxi !
My surgeon recommended walking each day and increasing as I felt good about it. Don’t overdo it. Slow and steady in the beginning. Most important is to remember that you had major surgery and your body will let you know what it’s too much at the time.
Each person is different with recovery and how much (or far) they can walk.
There is no specific answer. It’s up to you.
If walking x distance feels good, do it. You will know when you’ve gone too far the next day (with soreness).
But you can’t harm the hip by walking “too much” at this point … If you were to go on some grueling hike 10 days after surgery, your muscles would scream at you. As far as the joint, you can’t harm it by walking. I assume you’re using a walker or a cane or crutches … I walked quite a bit with the walker and with the cane … I think at 10 days, I was on the cane … the cane takes pressure off the operated hip.
Walk to your heart’s content … though in reality, you will get tired and be limited. I think I walked one-mile 8 days after surgery with the walker … and it felt great!
Thanks, makes a lot of sense.
Thanks for your info.
Hi. 6 miles of walk after THR is surprisingl
hi DOUGAL
Had mine in August
of 2018. started off walking on two crutches for first three weeks, around the house and along my garden path. Then managed to walk along the lane outside my house (about 100yds) gradually putting more weight on operated leg.
was driving after five weeks, and without a crutch at 6 weeks when
I hsd my post op all clear from the surgeon.
walking miles now without any
pain to speak of! A little achey by night but they say it takes up to a year to fully recover!
good luck - let your body be your guide!
stop if it hurts!
regards
