Walking without a crutch

hi I'm 5 wks post op today and just took my little dog for a walk up the road about 10/15 minutes with no crutches any one else done this .

Yes I was dancing 2weeks after opp and just talked to my surgeon today and he has given me the all clear to drive will be 4 weeks post opp tomorrow

It depends on whether you have the anterior or posterior approach. The recovery for the anterior is much quicker than from the posterior. I had posterior approach and they had me using a walker with no more than 50% weight bearing on my new hip for 4 weeks and another 2 weeks on a cane. After that I was able to walk pretty well unassisted.

I also had the posterior and have made a great recovery. Now wait for the next one

I had lateral approach and was weight bearing same day of surgery with a walker. I was using a walker 1 week then a cane for almost 5, week 6 totally unassisted and today is week 9 and doing great, almost like never had a surgery performed. Once I stopped the pain meds the depression cleared ( which was 1 or 2 a day week 5).  The first 3-4 weeks were God awful but each day, each step was wonderful!  Wishing you continued recovery and you will know when you over do it, till week 7 I was looking for that balance.

hi chloebo,

congratulations. ....

do you need any walking aid, like a stick/cane ...

warm welcome to this forum, sweetheart

big warm hug

Congrats Chloe - I suspect that many of us on a slower recovery line wish this had been our experience too. But ... we are all very different - from surgical approach used, # of hips affected, other health and fitness considerations and individual ability to tolerate anaesthetics, meds, etc.

It is a bright sunny day here today and I would love a walk but still need help getting down stairs with cane then switching to walker as I am not permitted full weight bearing yet.

So ... very happy for you and wish I was walking along side ...

Keep up the great progress - so very good for you to feel this good after all the pre-op anxieties and pain.

Bravo.

PS - I made it a full block before having to turn back yesterday .. exhausted. But it was a start!

Hi Chloe, I have a 6 month puppy, so wasnt the best time to have an op, but I am now walking the woods with him , planting my daffs and back to the gym and its 4 weeks post op....  my crutches and "potty" waiting to be returned.... at times I think its all going too well, was even thinking if I could venture to wearing "heels" for a night out ......

but that might be a bit too careless ...    Has anybody else worn heels again after the

THR , I have a ceramic hip , not sure if that makes a difference.

Good luck being crutchless xx

Hi renee  I'd been walking round house without crutch but first time I'd been out on my own without one, muscles started aching a little but nothing really bad , I wouldn't walk to far at mo just a little more each day.

Xx

oh bless ya I feel that this forum has really helped me so much since I had my op as We are all different in every way and some people were doing things that I couldn't do at such a short time so glad every one is doing well & hope you all have a great recovery.

Xx

Very well done. You are doing your exercises and heeling by leaps and bounds. Every day we get stronger. Take it slow and many more good heeling days ahead.

Hi chloe, I am 5 weeks post op as well, was told partial weight bearing to start had top of femur repaired, walking in house with no frame, going try out doors tomorrow with one crutch? Finish blood thinner tablets tomorrow and ditched ted stocking today?

Whoopee- lots to celebrate ... time to dance to the music!

Thats great news chloe  All the best!
