Walking without crutches yone

Hi I'm 6 weeks post op I've done a small amount of walking outside taking my dog for a couple of short walks without sticks , after having good advice on here I haven't done it anymore until today I took my crutch with me in case I needed it and my muscles really hurt and my scar was stinging anyone else had this .

hi Chloe I too am six weeks post op - scar itchy and sore - I take my dog out twice a day w cane and have OT twice a week - I find myself w no energy and wonder if I'm being too hard on myself I'm tired and limited w activities- this forum is good

Hi Chloe! Yes I get that and I'm 10 weeks out. It's like all the muscles tendons nerves are coming alive especially when using more and after this big surgery. All the cutting and pulling of the muscles and the tissue takes time to heal. Hope you feel better soon.

Think you are doing the right thing taking the cructh with you, I understand when you have a dog, they get bored and need the smelling challenge, so the crutch is great to  steady you .. and they need to get out ..

but can agree with you the stinging ... tingling and nigles, are "hopefully" our muscles finding themselves again ..   I'm sure you will find as with myself and, most of the other "hippies ", bio oil massage will help...by using fingers either side of the scar, stimulates and helps recovery..  x

Hi Chloe

Im almost 6 weeks too and have been using one crutch indoors . I feel like I could walk unaided but am scared as physio has stated 6 weeks and then down to one crutch ! Scared to tell her Ive been using one crutch for past week ! ( wd never manage to carry anything otherwise) I do move around the kitchen unaided and have taken about ten steps in garden etc . My scar also stings slightly and itches too . I am going to try the bio oil x

I may get some of that.oil as well then I've had no physio and just some exercises that I got off line . Myn is very itchy to .keep me fingers crossed . X

Thank you for posting this Chloe. I'm four weeks post op and limping markedly if I try to walk a few steps without my crutches. I think I'm jumping the gun a bit and will go back to using at least one crutch in the house and both crutches outside.

hi lou i too am 4 weeks post op and i had the physio at home yesterday i am also walking with a bad limp when even using one crutch she has told me the muscles are not yet strong enough to weight bear and advised me to use 2 crutches both in and out of the house and keep up with the exercises i do walk so much better with the crutches so gonna follow her advise until i get stronger it is only early days for us.

xx

hi chloebo

I agree with other responses - Muscles might still be weak, probably are and under major repair - when walking unaided, a lot of energy and strength is required to keep the body in balance - even inside the house -

it is all still so fragile -there will be stiffness and discomfort, even stinging for a while and eventhough unpleasant, it is a sign of healing ..

however, when pain increases or causes you concern, call your doctor and have it checked -

sounds like you are doing great -

big warm hug

Thank you Tracy, I think you're right and I'll do the same. I have my physio tomorrow afternoon at the hospital so I'll see how that goes. You're right about it being early days too - trying to run before we can walk - sort of! xx
