how much walking is enough, I'm now at 10 days , walking 3times a day, very slow, my daughter actually counted the steps, and I'm doing 580 each time, I am tired out in late afternoon eve, but I think that's as much to do with the op , as anything else, plus I do my exercise s 3 times each day, but other than getting up and down to the loo, and fidgeting a lot, after, five o'clock I don't do a lot. Is that about right, ? Or may be I should do a bit more, I'm a bit clue less, any body have an opinion?
Sounds as if you are doing pretty good!! I wasn't even able to walk at ten days! However, by six weeks I was doing two kms. a day . . Dont push yourself too hard though . .there's an awful lot of recovery needed. . not just the knee, but the whole body has suffered a lot with this op.the body also needs a lot of rest to be able to heal. . .
I only had pkr, so would that be why?
I was very slow. . most people are able to walk almost immediately, but I had a lot of nerve damage . . Although it was a pkr, it's still a lot of trauma for the body!
I think you are doing great for 10 days post op. Rest when you can your body needs it to regenerate. Good luck
Sounds like you are doing loads for only 10 days. Don't try and push yourself to exhaustion. Little and often is just as good. Don't be hard on yourself if you feel tired in the evening and not doing anything as your body is telling you it's had enough for one day!! 😴😴
I thin you are doing too much. You need plenty of rest at this stage, especially as you are exercising too. Go easy
Please be careful Mandy. I also felt wonderful and was walking well at 10 days. I thought the worst was behind me and stopped the heavy meds. Big mistake. I went backwards at three weeks and learnt a lesson. Still I agree with you, it's hard to know when enough is enough. I am 7 weeks post op. And cycled 3 klms yesterday. Could have done more but reigned myself in. I am having left knee done next week.....oh the joy. Keep smiling and exercising but please please don't overdo it. Sue
I hear what your saying, but I'm day ten today, I wouldn't describe me as walking well just very slow and limpy . I have an static bike, I wouldn't dare get on it yet but will when able, I already get so frustrated, living right by a river, with lovely walks , and 2 beautiful young energetic border collies , I just want to get back out there. I am doing what I can day time, but by 4/5pm, I'm a 90 yr old body, a lathargic one at that. Brilliant that your only 7 weeks and already out there. How do you find your other knee has managed, ? My other knee is actually the worse one, but wasn't quite so painfull, but I won't be able to get my walking much above 100 metre, even with a stick, before I have it done,.?
Oops, I lost my post. Mandy, I cycled 5klms today and my good? Knee gave me more trouble than the tkr knee. Still I have very dodgy nights and the evenings, although improving, are still not good. My un operated knee is very sore and I will be glad to get it done next week. My advice is to keep checking this forum, you will get so much good, practical advice. Take care of yourself and keep on with the medication longer rather than shorter. Good luck. Sue
Thank you , and will do.
Hi Mandy
I think you may not feel it now but you maybe overdoing it, my surgeon gets me to doing full set of exercises twice a day and walk a few times during the day no where near as much as you are, as your resting from this your muscles are working on recovering...
It gets to a stage where it becomes more of a mental struggle rather than a physical one as progress may seem slow so you try to speed this along but not knowing are you doing good or making things worse.... and that's what the doctors don't prepare you for the mental struggle I found and still do at times that this can be an issue.
its a major surgery procedure that you have had and needs time to recover but you don't want to go full throttle only to realise later you've actually done more harm than good.. Talk to your physio and doctor how your feeling and their thoughts of what you should or should not be doing 10 days out of TKR...
Saying that you are doing well, well above where I was at 10 days post.
Cheers
Tony
Hi, if I had had tkr I would agree, but I only had pkr, I don't no how much of a difference there is in pain, or recovery, between the two. Do you.?
Do what you can it sounds about right remember to rest.
Also it is easier to walk to a destination not so easy to get back
Ok , your all right, I fell apart last night in tears, with pain, had a shower about eight, then my hubby had to get those awful white socks back on, which I always dread, and I think where I have proberly over done it, and showered to late( usually try to have one in afternoon, but didn't get time) I can't shower on my own am very wobbly getting in and out of bath. I was just over tired, generally knackered , and fed up, and the white socks finished me off ,went to bed at 9 and just fidgeted through sleep, . But I feel muuuuch better this morning, and will now learn my lesson ,, walk 3 times aday but not so far, . And basicley slow down, .😭
There you go you can't beat a good cry and an early night hopefully you will soon sleep through the night as well as walk there and back
Take care
