Warfarin and Ablation

I have just had my final check up with my heart specialist which was now working properly and asked him when i could come off of warfarin (i had my ablation on 23rd April) he told me after 6 months but i would have to check my pulse daily because of the risk of having a stroke after stopping the warafrin.

Can anybody throw a light on this?

Hi there - I had my heart valve repair beginning January and also the maze procedure at the same time which hopefully would  cure my AF.  Around 6 months later  I was given a 48 hour monitor to wear to check if my AF had gone. Result was that all looked fine but the consultant said as a precaution, in October he would arrange for me to be given a monitor to wear for 2 weeks just to make absolutely sure my AF had gone. I'm quite surprised your consultant is leaving it up to you to check your pulse as often AF can be appear to be fine for long periods but then show up on a monitor at  odd times - I would definitely ask for a heart monitor but not yet - Your specialist is right,  it can  take at least 6 months before the AF rights itself.  All the best.

Thanks for the reply my AF has been fine since i had my ablation but from reading all the literture i feel that i am on Walfarin fro the long term

Alan

You could be right - am wondering if I will ever come off warfarin -  in some ways I guess if they say I can stop I will be worried!!!!  At least I hav no side effects from it so that's a plus!!
