warm knee

Hi im 5 weeks post op and as ive mentioned still ina great deal of pain. My knee was dreadful ladt night and all day today!!! It is now very stiff and warm to the touch??? How do I no if the warmness is caused by being stiff or if it could be infection??Does anyone else still have a warm knee??

Hi Andrea yes sometimes if I don't rest up enough after walking or exercise or sometimes just standing up to do ironing.

I still ice and rest as much as I can but please see your doctor to make sure all is ok

Yes Andrea I am 7 weeks.

My knee, first 5 weeks was burning, ice pads 10 times a day

now bit better ice pads only 3 times.

did they not give you ice pads when you left hospital?

Hi, yes, I'm 7 weeks post op and my knee gets stiff very quickly after resting it and I have to stand still immediately on getting up to get my balance.  Also knee gets very warm after exercise.  I think after reading various posts that these are quite normal which is reassuring.

Yep I'm 5 weeks and my knee is red hot most of the time. My physio said they expect this and indeed its a requirement as its part off he healing process. Ice packs several times a day. Elevate above the heart as well. Oh dear it's a long road to recovery isn't it

Another yes here, I'm also 5 weeks post TKR and my knee is often very warm to the touch, especially if I've overdone things. Which I keep doing.......

yes it is, 7 weeks and still feel I should b a lot more advanced xx

Thank you all for your replies I now feel better about the warmth I will try some ice tonight before I go to bed. Thanks x x

Yes sometimes wamer than the other especially if stressed or been on feet. if its red and very hot then could be infection check if you feel concerned - you know your own body. Ice too or cool flannel. Drink fluids.

If you notice an area that's red, then you might need to be conderned. For me it was an undisolved inside stitch that was working it's way up to the top. Of course, I freaked and thought I had some infection, but the doctor assured me I didn't. After stuff came out it healed. But then two weeks later, happened again, to a lesser degree. My sister (a nurse) said that because of the first one, that location was now the one of least resistance and other things might work their way to that spot. Lovely. Not! But that was the last time it happened.

Thanks moan il bear that in mind x

If there is no seeping and drainage and you aren't running a temp it probably isn't an infection, its just the excercise causing some inflammation. Take a couple of aleve 2 times daily and see if it eases in 48 hrs. Be sure and ice and elevate. If that doesn't do it, obviously a trip to the Dr wouldn't hurt.

What are aleve???

Mine is still warmer than the other one at 13 weeks. . there is nothing unusual about the knee being warm. You culd try using ice more often to try to lower the inflammation,  but don't worry about a bit of heat in the knee.   Still also very stiff especially first thing in the morning, and after doing my two kms walk . . and if I don't stretch and push it for one day, the next day it is really stiff . . .

Sorry....I'm in the states and here its an OTC

Inflammation /pain fighter. Very similar to the prescribed drug naprosen. Not as hard on the kidneys as ibuprofen.

I did have problems with red and warm knee, I phoned the hospital and they told me it was unlikely that an infection would have set in (was 3 weeks post tkr) at this stage. I gave it a few dsys and the redness and heat did subside. They did tell me that the heat in the knee could last for several months.

If you are really concerned contact your surgeon.

That has made me more motivated. I am on holiday and have been sitting around a lot the last couple of days and my knee seems a lot worse - so I need to get up and keep pushing every day as you say - thanks. Seems more stiff and swollen at night than in the morning. Going to start walking more I have become a bit sedentary in the last few weeks and now realise that the physio is long term for us if we want to maximise the benefits of our op - the suffering will hopefully one day seem worth it.

Andrea, The surgeon told my husband that most patients have a warm knee for the first year. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it gets red and is warmer than it has been. If you have infection, you may have a temperature. Are you in therapy?

Keep hoping!  it does seem that we can't relax for more than a day or we pay for it.  Yes, it always seems to be worse at night doesn't it!  I used to think it was because the painkillers were wearing off, but I don't take any now, and it's still always worse from about nine o'clock nwards, until I crash out at about 11 . . . never been so exhausted as since this operation!  enjoy your holiday . .we deserve it!

Keep hoping keep moving keep bending and keep straightening sounds like a mantra maybe someone should make some t-shirts for us !!
