Washing before op!

My second hip op is on the 21st of this month. First was end of February this year. I have read about a special body wash you can use before and after op to help prevent MRSA. Not sure I can put the name of the product as it may be advertising. My daughter was advised to use it before and after her Caesarean by her hospital. .

Anyone used any of these body washes?

Hi Lynn,

I don't know if it is the same as the UK but in France we use Betadine for washing before an operation.

I was given a bottle of dark red liquid to use for 3 days prior to the surgery. Ian in the USA and forget the name

The hospital should provide this for you. My first hip was a wash hospital gave me to do night before and morning of. My second hip was different they gave me wipes to use. Like one wipe for legs, one for arms, I've for torso, and so on. When I got to hospital they wiped me down again. I had to do this night before and day of. The wash is Hibicleans. Hope all goes well! 🤗🤗 LD

At our hospital in ottawa, they use sponges infused with 4%chlorhexidine gluconate. We are instructed to shower and wash with it the night before and again the day of surgery.

Hope this helps.

Oh - they sold it in the hospital gift shop!

L

I was given phisohex anti bacterial wash to wash with 5 days prior to the operation.

I read a study that indicated these washes don't reduce infection rates, but used it anyway.

Yes hepi cleanse from walgreens i use it still post op daily

Need to check spelling for u

Hibicleanse

Here in New England I was given two sponges and told to shower with them both the night before and the morning of.   I was also instructed to have freshly laundered sheets and pajamas

I used Hydrex surgical scrub also known as Chlorhexidine gluconate 4% skin cleanser.

In the UK the hospital will supply this along with the stuff to put up your nose.

They should give you a bottle at the hispital, it is a specialised foam wash very easy to use.

Hi Lynn.  Here in Pennsylvania my doctor supplied chlorhexibine wipes to be used two days and the night before surgery along with a Hibiclens packet to wash the site on the morning of surgery.

For both my THR's my hospital gave me HIBICLENS® I washed with it for 2 days prior to surgery.     8oz and 4oz bottles. Both a skin cleanser and antiseptic, HIBICLENS® kills germs on contact and can continue working for up to 24 hours!

You can find it at major retailers and most drug stores. Hope this helps

Yes it had beta dine in it most surgeons recommend it now. .

Great tip.

Here in Australia you are given the special sponges night before and morning of surgery, by the hospital at the pre-admission and education clinic.

They also take you though all the precautions of clean linen on your bed, and clean nightie and all clothes in the run up to your surgery, so you are not exposing yourself to anything.

In the surgery, but you may not be aware of this, you are bathed in betadine, they don't spare slopping it on in spades, from the waist down to your knees, front and back.

That where the wet ones or baby wipes come in useful after surgery to try and get all the sticky betadine off, especially for me as it irritates my skin, nurses and husband were trying to clean me up as I woke up on the ward, after both surgeries, kind of nice to wake up to someone washing you, and at the same time talking to you to explain what was going on.

I had my hip op almost a year ago and was never told to use a special wash before surgery, just shower ( i am in the UK). They used an iodine based wash around my hip area nad leg once asleep.

In uk north west /east all.elective surgey patients have 5 day pre op body shower gel called octenisian it reduces risk.of MRSA and MSSA .. you use it like a shower gel daily for 5 days prior to surgery ..Also they follow a pre op regime to reduce infection so not only washing hair and body but bedding also .all joint replacement pts nursed in cubicles

Patients screened and treated for MRSA amd mssa 2 weeks prior to admission in pre op and given Bactoroban nasal ointment also if positive ..infection rates very low post op with this regime

The hospital I attend here in Australia for my hips, also is a specialist heart and general hospital, they also have a very low infection rate, which is very re-assuring, I believe the best in australia.

I also know they have an organ transplant team within the hospital, we were lucky enough to meet a patient who had a transplant some 6 weeks previous, so I don't think they are taking any chances with infection.

Also screened for MRSA in pre-op clinics and education.

This is good to hear! I am so worried as 13 years ago my mum passed away following a THR and contracting MRSA. She was at the hospital where she worked for 16 years before she retired, and I still work there as a nurse.

I'm not going to that hospital, but am still terribly concerned, my surgeon tells me there is no MRSA, at his hospital. I find that hard to believe. After 30 + years of nursing I probably have MRSA up my own nose, so will be interested to see if they swab me!

Hi

I am sister in pre op we screen all our pts for joints for MRSA and MSSA at their pre appt your trust should have a similar policy . I know how you feel being a nurse we sometimes know too much but from my own experience in august the spinal and sedation was fantastic I woke up following surgery was up on a zimmer 3 hours after and home the next day .. we use gabapentin day prior to surgery and for 10 days after along with other pain meds .. take them regularly and you will manage better and.follow those hip precautions as.not worth risk of dislocation.hope all goes well and it's normal to feel anxious but my personal experience is very positive and 5 weeks down the line pain free and mobile .
