I have 2 tkrs, may and august, I joined a water exercise group today and they were jogging doing jumping jacks and other things that twisted the knee. I did alternate exercises but was wondering if the water made a difference with these impact exercises. If its important the water is three and a half feet deep, so two feet of me isn't in the water. I can't go deeper, that's the deepest part. I finally feeling better certainly don't want to do the wrong exercises. thanks
The buoyancy of the water substantially reduces the impact (pounding) on the knee. That's good. The twisting is bad. You may want to talk to your doc about a brace that will completely prevent the knee from doing that. He may have a favorite but the Donjoy Defiance model is such a brace. I'm saving up for mine... $500 OTS; $900 custom. Pic. Note: I found out too late that if the doc PRESCRIBES the brace within the time period allowed by your insurance (US), you could get it real cheap. I thought about it too late. Ratz. Remember...talk to your doc!!!
What is this brace please CHICO and when would you wear it as we do not seem to have the same in the UK
Sorry trees you can get this in the UK I was measured and fitted for one in January at the Spire Leeds. They are readily available and are expensive st £600. There is also a very similar model that is the same price and also over here called Osser.
Thanks Chico I knew you would be able to help. I can easily avoid the twisty movements. The class is do the parts that you can. If learned long ago that I only need to please me at these things
Because of lack of exersise due to last surgeries I joined the gym. I have an occupational therapist, and physical therapist at home. When I go to the gym, I enter the pool and do what feels right to me. My physical therapist has me doing chair to stand, same thing I do under the water squatting with no pain.
Also you can wear your brace in the water. I use mine rarely. The twisting will stop as soon as muscles get stronger. 2 1/2 months out of 2nd right knee replacement, i can speed walk up a hill. Determination!!!!
Good call Tricia... Yes, they may go by another name there. Just remember, Donjoy makes hundreds of types of braces. You need the exact one to prevent the knee from twisting. Your doc or a brace shop can help you get the right one.
NOTE: I'm "Not-a-Doc" so these are my opinions...OK? For normal, daily life, a brace is completely unnecessary. Rebuild your dead quads, glutes and core and you'll be fine. I'm only thinking about the brace because I want to do something the docs say I shouldn't. But even then, just a light, recreational activity...definitely not entering the Olympic Trials for the downhill or slalom events...and certainly not playing competitive hockey again. This is just a protection I feel I need...just in case the knee wants to twist on its own. Need to prevent that. Again...my opinion...my choice.
Thank you I had not heard of them with regard to TKR
I don’t care about everyone’s response. To each its own. If your knee is twisting wear a brace while working out. I learned by my 3 previous surgeries. Dont use as a crutch. I use mine only when needed. 10 weeks out of 2nd total knee replacement right. Feeling great now with water arobics 👍🏼 Try it you will love it no pain workout
