Hi all,
I had my hip replacement at the end of March this year, posterior approach. I am now 11 weeks post op and struggle with weakness in my buttock and side of my thigh! I struggle to put full weight on my leg to get up the stairs… I was just wondering if anyone else has this same issue? I’m starting to worry a bit as it’s not getting much stronger..
thanks,
Jen
Definitely call your surgeon’s office … talk to surgeon or a nurse or assistant. Report what’s going on … We all recover at difference paces … I do think you could be further along, so yes, reach out to your surgeon.
Hi Jen. Im just past the three month mark myself. Although I didnt have a hip replacement, I did fracture the neck of my femur and I have 3 screws holding it in place. I can get up my stairs one step at a time leading with the good leg, have been doing this for a couple of weeks now,but I still hold onto the banister for support. I use a walking stick around the house and a walking frame when catching buses etc to do my shopping. I do experience muscle soreness the next day,so I just have a rest day. No good I guess if you have to work. But everyone has their own rate of recovery and threshold of pain. I going to the specialist this week for my last visit to see how my bones are healing after my accident. I wish you well. Regards Linda
hi
i think if you do the exercises they give you it does help. i had that problem and saw the physiotherapist and she gave me exercises to do with big elastic bands. some sitting down and some standing up . .also
hold onto a work top ,stand on your operated leg , with good leg bent up and bend down . it will feel shaky but it does help with the muscle .
but see your physiotherapist

Hi Jen, i’m at week 8, I have just started to walk up the stairs normally, putting weight on my leg, not 100% perfect yet though. Maybe get checked by doctor? I do still have some weakness in buttock area too, but not enough to bother me, regards Chrissy
Hi Irene. I was given this exercise to do last week. It hurt like hell. I could feel all my muscles tensing up. Also have to stand on the balls of my feet,on my bad leg as well. I know practice makes perfect but its hard to know if you are actually things worse by pulling a muscle that is resisting. A few of the exercises I need to do, I couldn’t even do prior to my injury,so I find it funny that Im expected to be able to tackle them now.
i too have this after 12 weeks , it is getting stronger with side walking exercises and massage of the ITB that gets pulled around to do the op. have you had any additional exercises or physio? my physio daud it was better to stick with two crutches even if you feel you only need one as it prevents developing a limp, and doing extra exercises to strengthen the weak areas. good luck
Hi Jenjen,
I could not put my full weight on my operated leg when out walking until about week twelve, I used my walking stick, the implant put in the bone felt uncomfortable. It seemed to settle down after week twelve. Do you exercise, it might be just strengthening you muscles is all you need to do, try clenching your buttocks together when sitting or lying down.
Hi there,
I done that today and they have referred me to physio for a post op assessment so hopefully they can advise me on what to do
thanks for your reply..
Jen
Hi Linda,
Oh my that sounds painful .. I hope your appt goes well and it’s good news.. it’s a task and a half this learning to walk properly again
take care,
Jen
Hi Irene,
Thanks for your advice it’s very appreciated
I do the exercises the physio gave me when I was in the hospital but I do think some more advanced ones would be helpful.. I don’t want to to too much without knowing I’m doing the right thing.
thanks,
Jen
Hiya,
Thanks for that and well done, you are doing well for week 8
take care,
Jen
hi i had posterior incision in march am now 12 weeks. i find my hip still sore and sometimes feels weak. i walk the dog every day and make sure i do squats . i put my hand on my hip when i do squats and i can feel the muscle move, that gives me a reminder that it is getting stronger.i have tough days if i have been carrying shopping but always make sure i do squats every day you feel urself getting stronger. i try and do leg raises if stuck in a queue. im back to work based at a desk its a slow long recovery everybody keeps telling me x
Hiya,
No I haven’t seen a physio yet but hopefully I will soon
.. I had been trying not to use my walking stick but my limp gets worse so 10p% using it all the time now!
thanks for your advice and i hope you come on leaps and bounds too..
Jen
Hi Jen,
Thanks for your reply
I do the exercises the hospital gave me and funnily enough the butt clenching one is quite a good one for easing the cramp (part of the weakness)..
Brilliant you have settled down now.. fingers crossed mine does too soon..
Jen
Hi Leah,
I will try that and see how it feels
it certainly is a slow recovery but luckily in work in a school and I’m term time so no work until August now woo hoo…
funnily enough when I’m out in a shop/queue I do the same thing lol.. people look at me like I’m mad!
I hope you feel stronger soon, take care
Jen
