Weaning off morphine

Hello everyone

TRHR 1st February 20 8 posterior approach

I have been on 10mgs 12hourly morphine twice a day and have three days left.

I now need to wean off these tablets and am seeking advice how best to do it.

I have some cocodamol that I could start taking instead as I feel I will still get some breakthrough pain when I start to come off I also have paracetamol and ibruprofen I could take. I really don't want to start up with pain as I only had my left hip replaced 14weeks ago any advice would be apptciated

Susan

Have you talked to a pharmacist/doc/nurse. They will have useful advice. I do know that you have to be very careful re what combinations that are taken. How did you do it last time? As you know cocodamol contains paracetamol so cannot be mixed with anything else containing it

I would cut down to one first and take paracetamol in between. See how you go for a couple of days. then stop it all together. Take paracetamol and then see if you need to co codamol in between. You have to expect some pain but it will get better. I was in horrendous pain after my op, later found out it was nerve damage which resolved but I was only on my morphine tablets full dose for about a week and a half then cut down to one and then only took if paracetamol did not work. I cannot take codeine or Tramadol so paracetamol was the only choice. I was told by the nurses not to be on morphine too long due to it being addictive. Ask for a telephone appointment with your GP. Good luck

14 weeks seems a long time to be on morphine. I would not recommend shifting over to any other narcotic. Use Ibuprofen or Tylenol. There is a tumeric supplement that really works for inflammation called Total Inflam. You can get it on Amazon. Also you can use heat for muscle pain and ice for swelling.

I am 5 weeks out and have been off all meds for a week. Yes there is soreness but that is part of the process as we use muscles that have been idle. The bone pain should be pretty much handled at this point.

Get with your doctor. Opioid addiction is real and you want to avoid that at all costs.

Good luck.

Sorry morphine was started on my 2nd hip replacement 1st Feb 2018 been taking it for two weeks from tomorrow not from my previous hip replacement sorry if you misunderstood

Susan

Slowly ... it's better not to do it suddenly.

As Maggie says, talk to a pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Sorry I did misunderstand. thanks for clearing that up.

I would only seek advice from your Surgeon or GP. I was on Norco for 5 days and then strictly Tylenol 600 mg for a few weeks. Good luck

I believe the recommendation for tapering morphine is 10% per week.

Hi Susan I am 11weeks post op LTHR  I was on really high doses of morphine for 15 months 110mg 12 hourly twice a day with 20mg break through morphine up to four times a day.  I hate the fact I had to take it my pain was so bad and after my op in recovery they could not control my pain as the dosage I was on was so high they had to give me Tramdol intravenously along with the morphine, I was in recovery for 4 hours before they would let me up to the ward.  When home from the hospital I thought I would drop down 10mg every 2 days oh jeez I went down to 40mg in 12 days and I was rattling it was awful I was agitated to death crying shaking and generally feeling like death at the time I did not realise it was withdrawal symptoms got an appointment with my doctor who was not happy as he said I should have went down 10mg every 4-6 weeks he wanted me to go back up to 80mg but I refused.  I am now down to 10mg and have to see doctor next week and he will give me 5mg for a few weeks and then that will be me of it and hopefully never have to be on it again. As you have only been on it a short time you should be ok but I would stop the morning one for a few days and just take the night one and then stop that.   Hope it works for you.

Hugs
