Wedding outfit - post-op

Good morning everyone from sunny Leicestershire

I'm beginning to get excited/nervous about my forthcoming RTHR on June 8th & am trying to plan as much in advance as possible. We have been invited to a close friends wedding 7 weeks after my OP & I'm starting to think about what to wear. I don't think I'll be able to wear heels so would anyone know where I can get some nice flats that would look right with a dress. I'm also hesitant about buying anything now as summer season clothes aren't in the shops yet & I'm also losing weight so will hopefully have dropped a bit more by my OP date. Then, on the other hand, I'm thinking 'will I be fit enough to go clothes shopping after'. I don't think it would be appropriate to turn up in my joggers!

Morning Fernlady :-)

I think you will be more than able to go clothes shopping closer to the time. The recovery process really does get a gee-up after the first two weeks and by week 6 you should be (almost) up and running biggrin.

So, if you can hold your nerve, I would recommend waiting.

Best of luck!

Michael x

Yes I agree with Michael!! I think you might even be able to wear heels!! I would definitely wait!! See how you feel!

Best of luck!!

Danielle

Good morning and Lol, no i guess joggers wont do ! How lovely to have such a special event to look forward to . Its hard to say where you will be at 7 weeks post op as everyone is so pdifferent . Im exactly 7 weeks and although ive done well , back at work etc , would say flat shoes still a must - i think u r right in looking now - i,ve been shopping in town twice since my op and its killed me both times . Shoe wise , BHS actually has some nice flats at a cheap price , otherwise go for Hotter or Shoeropody if you want to spend more, be really comfy  . Dress wise , it may be hot then ( who knows with english weather) , you,re unlikly to be fully recovered  so it can feel a bit vulnerable in crowds , you may well still be using a walking aid etc so my suggestion is go for something loose and summary with a light cardi , pashmina or jacket . Then if your weight has changed it wont matter. If you need  a bag - use a small cross body one that will fit the essentials in only . Monsoon is always great for wedding outfits , LK Bennet / phase 8 and Coast also but depends on your budget . You could look online and order stuff to try on at home . I do that all the time - its usually easy to return stuff .

also you want to wear something you can go to the loo in comfortably if contorting yourself in a strange toilet  with eg a very low seat - althougrestrictions lifted usually by then it can still be uncomfortable . Sit down reception ? Take a memory fiam cushion - hope all this is helpful and that you have a lovely time xxx

Thanks Bini, I have looked at ordering a few things online. I forgot about Monsoon, they also have nice sparkly flats don't they. The wedding is all in a hotel so I'm hoping I may be able to nip into a disabled loo if I need to. I'll also be taking my crutches (if I need them) & a cushion to put on the chair if I need it. I can leave everything in the car if I don't need it. Several friends are also staying the night so I can pinch their room if I need a break!

I agree about the pesky toilet issue.

Those standard seats are sooo low. I think everyone should have a raised toilet seat - they are wider too and therefore, more comfortable. x

Hi Fernlady,

I'm 7 weeks now and I wouldn't be comfortable in heels just yet, but you can get some lovely peep-toe flats that are very fashionable at the moment and would look lovely with the right sort of dress or skirt.  Just make sure they are nice and comfy and you wear them a few times before the wedding.

Cels Xxx

Ah yes a hotel should be easier - i was imagining  marqee and portaloos ! Just checked your profile  and you are only in your 40,s so my shoe suggestions may be too 'old' for you - sparkly flats from monsoon would be great and they do really pretty little bags as well - they have a better choice online than they do in their shop

im off for a week in New York at end of next month - at 11 weeks post op - and am trying to work out what to take / what to travel in etc etc

Hi Fernlady,

had my 7 year old daughter's first communion last Sunday (at 7 weeks post op, like you!) so faced a similar dilemma 😊. Although I am still walking with 2 crutches, I couldn't face wearing my ugly orthpeodic style clod hoppers. Heels are not yet an option for me and would look ridiculous with crutches anyway, so I opted for some smart flat boots, which luckily my husband helped me on and off with. I was also tempted by some lovely satin plimsoles (Ash had some lovely ones left over from the winter sale online) but couldn't justify the cost.

I totally agree with Bini, you might feel too tired to go shopping and negotiate crowds etc let alone coping with trying on lots of clothes in a place where you feel vulnerable. Have a really good look in your wardrobe before you buy anything as you might discover an old favourite you feel comfortable in. I opted for a long knitted dress which wasn't super smart but is super comfortable and I dressed it up with a bit of bling, blow dried my hair and borrowed a pashmina from a friend. I took a firmcushion to sit on and sat in the corner of the Church on a normal chair, as a low wooden pew would have finished me off. I am sure you will look lovely but the main thing is to feel safe, comfortable and enjoy the occasion. Hopefully you will be well recovered by then but whatever the case, everyone there will just be delighted you under the circumstances, so don't put too much pressure on yourself. It's a lovely day to look forward to and I hope you have a lovely time! x

I'd say it depends .....

Flats would be better than heels, much less risk there.

How about 'Hotter' the shoe catalogue people?

We all know that clothes shopping can be very theraputic.  I'd say as long as you can usually find something fairly easily off the peg, then delay to after the operation.  If you have problems getting the right style/fit, then perhaps looking at getting it now would be best.  Losing weight is good, and so hard to do.  After the Op, keeping it off is difficult as I found.  Not too many cakes/biscuits during the day.

Either way, enjoy the wedding, and your new pain-free hip.

Blimey, eben without mobility problems, a trip to NY fills me with dread! Too many people for me! I went to Vegas for my 40th & that was busy but not that bad as it's spread out. We did an awful lot of walking though so make sure you're always comfortable & enjoy yourself x

Thank you Cels x

Thank you x

It was all booked and paid for before i realised i needed urgent hip surgery ! And before i arranged travel insurance..... We are staying in a very posh hotel near central park so should be comfortable , also have booked bulkhead seats so extra leg room on plane  and ive saved my spare TED socks  for the flight . I,ve been twice before and love it - the amount i walk will just belimited by how much i can do - - otherwise it,ll be yellow cabs !

You're lucky as flats are fashionable at the moment. Depending on how mch you want to spend try Boden, Dune, Kurt Geiger, Hobbs, Jigsaw, John Lewis also have a great selection and if you live near a Waitrose you can order online and pick up the next day.

Also one thing to take into consideration is that by the time your recovered enough to go shopping post op you will be well into sale season - so you could pick up a bargain BUT on the other hand it's usually dross that's left along with all the new Autumn/Winter stock. Nice to have something to distract yourself with though.

Also forgot to say you could probably get away with a small block heel which are very fashion forward

Or even a flatform. Sorry I will stop now. 🙄👠👠👠👠

Lol, you obviously like shoes as much as I do! I did try on a pair with a very low - about an inch - wedge heel last week which were always very comfy - felt like I was teetering on 6 inch stilettos - so sticking to flat flats fir now !

Thanks Graham. I'm doing slimming world & I've completely changed the way I think about food. I don't think I'll even want any cakes or biscuits during the day as I don't really like them anymore - everything is too sweet or sugary. My hubby had a bag of chips last night & I pinched one & didn't really enjoy it at all. Whose to say when one of my friends comes round to visit post-op with her infamous lemon meringue pie, I might just cave in!

Are you a shoeaholic! I'll avoid those crazy sales (jumble sale fodder) & stick to online shopping I think x
