Hi lovely hippie friends,
I woke this morning with a little bit of blood/scab on my bed sheet and during getting washed and changed this morning I put my hand down and could feel a bit of a flap of skin along the wound with some stickiness. It's only the top couple of inches of the wound. I knew the stapling job wasn't as good this time as last but I didn't look at it the wound on Wednesday when the dressing was taken off so have nothing to compare with. I took a pic of it and sent it to my hubby who said it doesn't really look any different to what it did on Wednesday but I've rang the district nurses who are coming out.
I've never had any problem with wounds healing after any of my past surgeries so this is a little disappointing as I feel like it's a little step back. I'm just a bit worried about infection, how it looks cosmetically doesn't worry me.
Has anyone else had problems with wounds that didn't want to heal properly for some reason?
Hope you are all well this nice Friday afternoon 😊
Ali xx
Hi sounds like you are doing the right thing, a little weeping and some ooze has to be seen by the district nurse..Sure it will be ok though...Keep in touch..Ian +++
My first one wept quite a bit - but wasn't infected. You are doing the right thing by getting it checked though . x
The nurse has been out and said its just got a bit of a flap of skin over the top which is trying to heal but has nothing to heal onto. The actual wound itself underneath is fine though. She's out some antibiotic healing cream on and a new dressing and someone is coming out on Monday to check it again. She said this Inadine cream is really good and fully expects it to be healed by the time the nurse comes out on Monday. I have to keep it dry so that means no showering over the weekend 😢 and I've not got to overdo it. Hey ho, hopefully this will be my last hiccup. Apart from this, it's healing really well and my mobility is improving every day so can't grumble.
Happy Friday everyone 😎

Dear Ali 1
I was worried myself that my wound might 'burst open' ! so I am most interested in how you get on as having my staples removed on Monday.
It is a lovely day and I have done yet another tiny tiny walk..still not on my own tho..need the security of someone ( anyone I can get) to walk with me.
My sister went back this morninbg so feel a bit vulnerable but know lots are on therir own and I was lucky to have hre last few days.
Love,
Ali 2
Dearest Ali 2,
Please don't worry. I was the same first time around and was terrified of having my staples removed, thinking that there was no way such a big wound could possibly hold after only 2 weeks but it was fine, absolutely nothing to worry about. It was healed perfectly and had knitted together lovely.
What I have going on this time is just a little glitch, the wound itself has healed and is holding together without any problems. It's just a little flap that overhung when the edges were put together for stapling and it's looking for something to join on to heal. I am reassured now that the nurse has looked at it. It isn't hot, or inflamed round the edges which would indicate infection. Also, I would be feeling unwell too, with fevers and general feeling out of sorts and I'm not so there is nothing to worry about.
Wounds bursting open and infections are rare so try not to worry until there is something to worry about. It's not easy I know, as I am the same but the chances of something going wrong with your wound are very slim
Much love.

Thank you so much..you are such a reassuring girl.
I look to this site so much....I have off out now for my 120 yard walk.
Night Ali 1
Love Ali 2
No problem, at all lovely lady,
You will manage fine now I'm sure. You've had help until now which will have been invaluable I'm sure and helped you through the early days at home when you would have been at your most vulnerable and scared. I know you said you feel vulnerable and that's natural but I bet you have surprised yourself at how much you can do, and how much you improve with each and every day that dawns. 2 weeks post op on Monday and you are doing so so well. Walking 120 yards is not to be sneezed at and you will be adding to that each day.
You are an inspiration, seeing you now after the frightened little rabbit of 2 weeks ago, you are almost unrecognisable.
We are here if you need us. Just shout up and we will help if we can.
I don't know if you saw it, as private messages aren't very obvious on here, but I sent you a private message with my mobile number in it before your op. You are more than welcome to use it if you need to, though I'm sure you won't have to resort to that.
Keep on doing what you are doing and you will be chasing the pussy cats round in no time. Trust me 😊
Night night and much love.

I'm glad all turned out well Ali.
Have a good weekend,
Angela
good morning to all ...
Oh, that is scary ... good that you had it checked and that it is "just" (???) a flap trying to reach out ...phew ...
this 2nd scar feels different to me too - I am constantly aware of it and I am sure it is bigger and more on the butt than on the side as the 1st one is - that tiny little bit makes a difference - i sit, lie on it and feel it ...
Mine are coming out Tuesday ... I will still keep some dressing on for protection though -
You are so right Ali 1 ... what a difference huh - Ali2 .... you really have come a long way ....
How are you coping inside the house? everything I do is in S-L-O-W
motion .. so much patience is required ...
I have not taken a walk outside yet - it has been raining a lot and I live right in the middle of the woods - no normal walkway but an uneven, kind of muddy path - will be interesting -
Maybe today -
Sending healing and angel bessings

Morning m'lady,
I too have differences in my scar. I think this second one is further forward and the first was more on my butt. I think this as first time around, sitting on that raised loo seat thing they gave me was agony, and I dreaded getting the feeling that I wanted the loo. I dreaded it this time around too, expecting it to be the same but no, no pain at all from the wound area when sitting on it so there must be some difference I think. Also, the first wound was stapled much better than this one is. Whoever did the closing up did a much better job than this time. The first scar is very neat but this one is a bit 'all over the place'. As long as it heals though I'm not bothered about how it looks cosmetically. There's only my hubby going to see it ☺️
I hope the sun comes out so you can get your walk. It's brilliant sunshine here in Newcastle upon Tyne.

ALi 1 Hey are you a Geordie? I used to go to school in Newscastle as my parents lived in Shotley Bridge. Later was packed off to boarding school in Berwick as was such a badly behaved teenager!
Yes I am better..just impatient.. I live in a viallge outside Salisbury in Wilts and no i did not see your private post..thank you for Looking forward to being able to sleep on my side.....when is that you experieced hipsters?? Special thjose that have had a second one.

.
hello darling,
well, I have mentioned it in other threads already but it has been a non-issue for me -
1st R THR March 16, 2015 They showed me in the hospital how to position the pillow between my legs and turn over on non-operated side ..
2nd L THR September 10, 2015 they now "prefer" that I selpp on my back for 2 weeks ... They must be joking ...
so, for me it was really 2-3 days post-op ....
In the meantime, it has not been raining for a couple of hours and I did go outside and walked the path about 100 meters ...
off to take a nap now
warm hug

Hi Ali 2,
I am indeed a Geordie, born and bred. Berwick is such a lovely place but I don't really know much about Shotley Bridge, other than the contact I have with my NHS colleagues in the hospital there. It's out in the sticks a little bit, I know that.
I'm with you on the impatient bit. I find it hard to sit about when I can see jobs that need doing and often find myself getting up and attempting them, even though I know I shouldn't really. I don't go outside of my restrictions though, I would never risk my recovery, just for the want of reaching a corner to clean that might be just out of comfortable reach. It's just not worth the risk.
I was told after my 6 week check up that I could sleep on my side and I was so excited to go to bed that night (I'd slept mostly in the electric recliner) but I found I couldn't do it. It was too uncomfortable to sleep on either the operated or unoperated side at first and it took me until about 4-5 months to be totally comfortable sleeping on my side without having to turn over at least 4 times during the night. I've seen lots of people who manage it quite easily though so hopefully you will be one of them.
We are, all of us, getting better with each passing day and I think most hippies would say that it hasn't turned out to be anywhere near as bad as they expected it to be.
Go us!!! 😀
Much love.

Dear Ali 1,
Replied and lost it..WE lived two minutes from Shotley Bridge Hopsital..Not sure it even exists now.I went to a convent in Elswick Rd..St Annes before being sent away to Berwick for being a bolshi teen!
I think I have done too much today as ankle is very swollen..is this normal?? Can't wait to sleep on my side again....
LOvely day but couldn't risk going in garden as loads of gravelly paths...
Weary now but night to us all hippies....
Love,
Ali2
You, a bolshi teen? Never 😉
Yes Shotley Bridge Hospital is still there. Some of my patients still attend there for treatments. Elswick Road is in the west end of Newcastle, not far from the Red Cross headquarters, where I used to volunteer on the ambulances when the NHS ambulances were sinking under the strain. It was very rewarding, especially on emergency jobs, on blue lights when my hubby was driving. I loved it but my health meant I had to give it up. I'm rewarded though with the thought I gave several hundreds of hours of my time voluntarily for people less fortunate than myself, on top of working my full time job in the NHS. It was very tiring but worth it 😊
Your swollen ankle is quite normal. I still get swollen ankles some days, especially if I've been on my feet quite a bit or if it's been a hot day which it has today. You'll find you have a few more swollen ankles until your recovery is complete but it's perfectly normal. You will have some swelling which is caused by fluid in the op site which will gather in your ankles due to simple gravity. Try to sit with your legs elevated and this should ease.
Enjoy the rest of your Saturday evening.
Love
Ali 1 xx
Hi Ali 1,
Mmm yes I was a stroppy cat..Thanks for info about ankles. I have been better today. Derading tomorrow stapples out but hope it will be more comfy after. Since I have been home washing machine and now micr wave ( vital at the moment) have packed up..thank good ness for internet.
Are you a nurse???
Night Night ( Ta ra Pet)
Ali 2
Hi Ali 2,
I guess lots of us could have been described as stroppy teens but we all grow out of it in the end. My mother and myself fought non stop when I was in my hormonal teens and mum was menopausal so between the two of us my poor, long suffering, wonderful dad didn't have much peace. It's all part of growing up though.
No I'm not a nurse. I'm currently secretary to 3 consultant haematologists, dealing in blood cancers (leukaemias etc) and I love my job. During my time with the Red Cross I undertook extra training that saw me become almost ambulance technician, highly trained in medical emergencies. I loved taking the ambulances out and if I had my time over, I think I would train as a paramedic as looking after people seems to be in my nature and comes naturally to me.
I hope you get a replacement microwave, they are so handy to us hippies. You can get next day delivery from lots of companies these days so I hope you get a replacement.
Getting the staples out is nowhere near as bad as you might think. It's not painful, though I was past myself getting them out last time around. I was worrying for nothing. Standing long enough for the nurse to do her stuff was the worst bit but you don't have to stand, the nurse can do it in lots of ways that are best for you.
Sleep tight dear lady. Speak tomorrow.
