Weight Changes during Peri

Hi Ladies!

I wonder have any of you experienced weight changes during peri. I know typically, we tend to gain weight during this time but I guess I am just one of those few rare cases that I have lost weight since I have been experiencing all of these symptoms. I was around 160 and I stayed this size for a while and then in March 2014 I noticed I had looked smaller. I went down to like 150 or so. I was there for a brief time and now I am 140 something. I think that it is stress and hormones because sometimes I lose my appetite during that time of the month. I want to put on more weight because when I get to this size I don't like the way I look. I don't look ill it's just that I miss my curves. cry They have tested my thyroid and it comes back normal.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi Sharcerv

i too lost weight never been over weight though..

at first I went from 9 stone 7 (133LB) to 8 stone 1 (113LB) ummm i looked dreadful in early peri..

i am 5.6 tall..

anyway i seemed to level our again, but lately i have dropped about 9lb again and am now 8st 12 (123LB)  every thing hanging off me...

mind you lately i do take B6 (150mg) and that can make weight drop and also B12 that can too..  in some ladies..

Yes, I lost about 1 1/2 stone due to perimenopausal stress, health anxiety led me to lose my appetite, problems sleeping, irregular periods, early morning visits to empty the bowels.  All checked, no abnormalities.  With the correct SSRI and HRT I am stabilising weight now but still need to get the optimumum nuitrition so am seeing an advisor on Thursday.  A free wellbeing service ask your pharmacist if you live in UK.  I have heard of others losing weight, mainly due to the anxiety and appetite issues, especially if you're not having many carbs or fats.  Nevertheless, keep an eye on things with your GP but also keep it in perspective. I hope this helps a bit x

Yeah I have not been a big person always either. Even when I have been way up in the 170's, you couldn't tell because I have a lot of muscle and not really fat so I looked solid. I didn't know that you could lose weight during this time. Well it's good to know that all my symptoms check out with you ladies! Lol! I need to have my GYN test my Follicle levels to test where I am in menopause.

Yes it does help to know that I an not the only one and that this is something that can happen. I am 40 and my sister who is four and a half years older than me is also going through the change and she told me she has lost weight as well and she wasn't trying to. Stress can do a number on you. One other thing I meant to mention. I am going to ask my doctor to test my Adrenal gland levels because some of these symptoms can also be triggered if your adrenal glands are off.

hi sharcerv

let me tell you this re: FsH bloood test.

if your not well into peri it will come back normal, if your periods are often and erratic chances are it will also come back normal

your oestrogen needs to have dropped considerably, ie: not many periods each year for it to be accurate..

the test is only as good as your hormone levels on that day..

so bare that in mind

I am also 40 and have had all the symptoms as you and more...Im the smallest ive ever been and when i look in mirror i see this person that as aged all of a sudden and i dont like it...But my husband says im overreacting...peri has really been rough but thanks to Jay and all the ladies on here im feeling tons better..B6 has really helped with anxiety...I just have to keep telling myself its just hormones and move on...hope you start feeling better...

Hi Laurie

bless you sweetie.. so glad B6 perked you up, it changed my life for sure..

before I took B6 i felt awful and so anxious.. now all that gone 😃

hun .. dont get concerned when you look in the mirror, feel beautiful I bet you are and feel sisterhood and like a sexy woman, your at a beautiful age. and 40' s are the best i think... embrace them, feel beautiful.. make the most of them, ( i am 50) and tell myself this is a journey a natural transition, its womanly and we all have it, and we just ease through it with the help of all ladies kind warmth on here, and the help with HRT or the naturals 😄

i laugh about mine when my partner here ( he works overseas) i dont want him to be put off with my negative feelings we sometimes have about ourselves .. so i look in my bedroom mirror when ready for bed and say to him, ' check this menopausal chick out ' hahahahahahahahahaha we have to keep smiling ... take care chick Jay xxx

Thank you for reaching out to me. Our situations are the same almost. My husband makes comments about my weight loss and that has made me worry more.

I agree, Jay and sone of the others have been a tremendous blessing.

Oh okay. Thanks that is good to know.

Have you come up with any ways to bring your weight up? If you do please let me know?

Hi Jay,

Do you know of any ways that I can safely and naturally put on weight?

Hi Sharcerv,

Yes I have lost weight, about 20 kilos in 6 months dropped off, mainly due to the fact that my digestive system amd tummy went haywire October last year (though I had signs previosuly) and I became intolerant to most food but mainly dairy, gluten/wheat, tomotoes, onions and most fruit.  Extensive blood tests showed nothing but high FSH and cholesterol.  I dont like the way I look either and I cant get the weight back on, not that I want too put too much on, lol.  I also think its stress and hormones and like you I loose my appetite at least once a month even though I am not having normal periods now, miss months and then may have a little spotting.

I found that testing the FSH level is pretty useless and wont tell you were you are, mine was 111 in March and I hadnt had a period in 6 months then, the practice nurse said "yep you are halfway through menopause" I was so happy despite still feeling horrendous but I thought there was a light at the end of the tunnel.  I saw the doctor a week later, her parting words were "Well you could always drop another egg" and sure enough 2 months later the unthinkable happened I started spotting, brown then a little red blood.  I was devestated, then it happened again a few weeks ago.

I have no idea how to put some weight back on, trying to find a food supplement that is not dairy based is impossible and I cant eat any food that will put the weight on, so I am just trying my hardest to learn to not stress about it and slowly try to reintoduce some foods to see how I go.  Thanks to Jo Edwards who has posted on here a bit, I am now at least eating porridge a few times a week, so hopefully things will get better soonish...  Hope you can find something to help you...xx

Hi Sharcerv

no i dont really... only higher calorie intake, but think a dietician is in order for such things like weight gain..

I think maybe you need to chill abit, if its peri then this happens ( everything you ask) dont stress yourself more by over worrying... try relax abit hun..

inner calm and all that... stressing is a major factor of stress related weight loss in some..

relax your mind and have a good day Jay xx

Thank you so much for sharing. I feel somewhat better knowing that this is fairly common. I have started doing research on weight gaining products. If I find one that I think is legitimate and does not have any side effects, I will post it here.

Hi Sharcerv..

i find it doesnt matter how many calories i increase ( or did in the past) weight still doesnt come back on... it just tends to want to do what it wants to do...

if your okay and feel okay... try not to worry as it just makes it all worse..

let the peri take its course... try and relax a little.. 😐

enjoy your afternoon... Jay xx

Yes, you are right. I have been stressing the heck out of myself! Lol! But I guess it's because I'm just not used to all of these things happening. I just turned 40 in January and it's like, wham! I got hit with all these changes. It is frightening. But I do need to chill.

Hi Sharcerv

yes you seem ... i could be wrong... to be abit overly concerned ..

i too was 40 when i started peri.. i am 50 now and still in peri so sometimes it takes years and if you are like me and have peri for 9 or 10 years, you cant have the next years worrying about it,, take one day at a time, and enjoy your 40's i loved mine even though i was in peri... best years ... enjoy hun..

Jay xx

I thank you for saying what you said. It snapped me out of my frenzy. You know like in a movie when that person is hysterical and the other person comes over and slaps them across the face? I guess what you said was that slap that I needed, so thank you.

God has blessed me with two beautiful kids, a five-year old boy and a one-year old girl. I have been so distracted by all of this that I wasn't giving them the part of me they need; the fun side. I was always depressed or agitated. But no more. Like you said, this is normal and we all have to go through it. I need to get over it. So thanks again for my wake up call.

Hi Sharcerv

I only said it ( not to be nasty or un sympathetic) but to try and tell you to enjoy the 40's, us ladies are always here for each other and believe me I came on here in Jan rock bottom and they helped me no end, just talking and the lovely ladies being there made so much difference. so never feel alone, but do enjoy your life hun, its a natural process, there are no time limits we are all different.. and even when you reach full meno it can still be a weird old time with symptoms being prolonged..  you may even be a lucky one and sail through this in just a couple of years.. so embrace it and we all have it ... so  enjoy and please relax ... 😃 ... i have had peri 9-10 years so if I can ever help you always ask hun... Jay xx
