Weight Loss and Stomach Pain

My 16 year old daughter has lost over a stone in weight and is now down to 7 1/2 stone.

She has continual stomach pain and finds it hard to poo.

She has been to see 3 doctors now and they all say its either:-

Her age.

Stress.

Nothing to worry about, but I am really worried.

She is cold all the time and looks generally ill.

I am at a loss as what to do next.

Hi Sarah, I completely sympathise. I'm in the same position as your daughter. Constant pain and have lost over a stone in weight. I'm down to 8 stone now. You need to insist she at least has bloods done. Also maybe an abdominal ultrasound. Not saying there's anything wrong but the docs need to be doing their jobs and not labelling everything as ibs. That's the mantra I hear. Because I'm a lot older they have sent me for tests. They need to do the same for your daughter, even if it's just to put her mind at rest. If you can afford it and the docs are being stubborn I would be tempted to go for a private ultrasound - about £90. If you can afford a bit more a private ct scan is £500.

Have you tried bulking the fibre in your daughters diet? Also plenty of water. I've found that eating soluble fibre ( porridge and fruit) has helped me. Also have a look for FODMAP foods - it might help you to alter her diet whilst you wait for your docs to pull their heads out of their bottoms.

Hi Stella,

Thank you so much.

I am going to change her to my doctor as he is amazing and always listens and I will insist on blood tests as i keep reading things on the internet and thinking the worst!!

We have changed her diet and she now eats very healthily, no red meat and lots of fruit and veg.

I hope that all works out well for you and that they find out what is wrong.

I hate being fobbed off by doctors.

Thanks again

Has she ben referred to a consultant? If not you should insist.

Hi Derek,

No she hasn't. The doctors keep saying there is nothing wrong with her when I think there obviously is.

Hi Sarah, stomach pain may be due to gastritis or due to peptic ulcer. It is not related to weight loss, but it may be due to stress, medicines or due to persistent acidity. Please consult your GP for diagnostic procedure like 'oesophagogastroscopy'. It will help you to confirm the underlying cause of stomach pain.

Forgive me i am not familiar with the term stone in regards to weight. Anyway you should be worried and get her something like a stool softner or for constipation. You neex to find a specialist because that is not normal.

A stone is 14 lbs.

Hi Pats,

Thank you for the info.

Thank you to all of you.  I knew I should be worried!! I feel bad that I have let 3 GP's lead me to believe all is okay.

They look at her age and say, Girls of 16 don't get................
