Weight loss during perimenopause

Hi everyone, I lost about 25 pounds during peri due to no appetite. I have recently gained back my appetite for the past several weeks now. I hope to gain back at least 10- 12 pounds. Has anyone here experienced the same thing as me?

Hi Maria,

Yes I've experienced similar. I lost almost 20 lbs, which brought me down to the weight I felt the beat at. It came off pretty quickly, over about 3 months and I wasn't really trying to lose weight...just wasn't that hungry. Of course, with my anxiety I was imagining all kinds of health reasons for the weight loss. Of course there were none. Then a few months ago my appetite changed...now I crave carbohydrates all the time and have gained 8lbs back without even trying! So I try to be very careful about eating too many carbs. That weight just sneaks back on!

I meant to say...the weight I felt the best at....darn autocorrect!

Hi Maria, yes I did lost a stone in weight look so bony...I'm a slim person and because I lost appetite due to feeling sick and then started to force my food down made me throw up even more...this has now subsided thank god, I think it was worry too that help it on,I do tend to loose weight very quickly so I have to be careful not to stress myself out about the menopause...and take it in my stride and hope for the best now, I have been a lot better now I'm getting nearer to menopause and hope to continuing feeling the way iam after I reach post.

Thanks tmpearce, I am just so glad to be able to eat without forcing myself. I am being very careful with my carbs and sugar intake. When I lost the 25 pounds people kept asking me if I was sick. Even some of my co workers were concerned about me. I don't ever want to experience that again. I thought I was dying , kept running to the doctor. Had so many test done.

Hi maria101, when I lost the weight I started looking sickly too. I kept going to my doctor, he couldn't tell me why I had no appetite, or why I was losing so much weight. When I told him that I think I am entering menopause, he didn't believe me until my blood results came back. He said when women go through menopause they gain weight. I told him not me, I am one of the few who lose weight. Just like I lost weight when was pregnant.

Why don't these doctor's listen to us.

they never listen to us maria.  I am nearing menopause and have lost weight I gained through perimenopause without trying.  I have just handed out more money on an pelvic scan this week because of my stupid doctor frightening me into thinking that my spotting for 10 days was not normal and I have just found out from a nurse that it is normal to have spotting when nearing menopause AND as I thought, my scan was normal too.  really annoyed with the doctor and have been annoyed with their ignorance towards menopause in general.  they haven't got a clue!

Dear Maria

I lost a good stone in peri, no appetite it really worried me, it was the excessive reflux caused me to have gastitis (one of the symptoms was no appetite) eventually it did clear and I put weight back on plus abit more! Do you have any other symptoms? I had to force myself to eat at this stage, I really didn't have any appetite.

yes i did my love because i couldnt eat then i did a flip around and cant stop eating !!!! what it is to be a women eh x

I did have the bad anxiety, depression and panic attacks, lack of sleep, no sex drive also. Now I am happy to say these symptoms have really calmed down. I am waiting for my sex drive to kick in again.

Yes...I have to make sure I eat or I lose weight. This foggy brain is part of the problem. When I first experienced perimenopause I dropped weight and couldn't eat. It was actually scary for me because I thought I had cancer.

Oh my goodness. I am so glad I read this thread. Everyone of you detailed exactly everything that is going on with me. It was so scary thinking something really bad was wrong. And people asking about my health. Ugh!😢 And then that just makes the anxiety go up and the weight go down. And I'm telling you, there is not much to lose here. After being admitted to the hospital for passing out, the only way I was able to put on weight was drinking regular sports drinks and ramen noodles...carbs. And the sodium helped with my bp. I did begin feeling better and put on some weight, but when I don't eat like that, energy goes down. I think it has more to do with bp. I have maintained the extra 5lbs for now, but I wish the doctor would listen about my energy and low bp. I think I am fixing to switch doctors...to a female.

Yep I did . And now I have put on 5 -7!ibb every month from January to August this year. So be very careful what you eat or you'll rnd up over weight and impossible to shift it off again.

Yes me too, I thought loss of appetite and weight what is wrong with me! I was too scared to even shower because I didnt want to see how much I had lost! Obviously it was the gastitis with me but I think with peri it's all the reflux and stomach issues which can cause loss of appetite.

And with regards. Switching to a female doctor. Don't expect any better from one. The are just as bad if not worse . Mine is a b--/h I left her surgery in tears.?dhe was so rude. when I was trying to explain my symptoms of peri , she refused blank to listen or do bloods , she said at 44 I'm to young even though she tells me I have s hormone imbalance . What the hell.

Hi! I am 41 and going through the same as you! The weight loss is terrifying! How are you doing now?

Hi April, I know this message was weeks ago, so hope you're doing better now... let us know how you're getting on.

Just chiming in to say I am having a weight loss/low appetite/reflux/migraine flare right now. Going on for about 4 weeks now. Just now getting to the point where I can eat 3 tiny meals (snacks really) and drink a nutritional smoothie drink most days.

The anxiety is madness, yes, fight or flight all day and all night. Headaches. Insomnia. Body aches. And once the fight or flight shuts off for a minute, I crash so hard.

It's dawning on me I need to get a couple of specific things checked out... 1) sleep apnea. Hubby says my snoring has increased (not sure how, as I don't feel I get any sleep at all!), so I have an appt this week with my dr. to discuss. 2) Possible menopausal asthma. Worst allergy season ever this year, and wake up with weird sensations in my throat often enough I should get it checked out.

Hope you're seeing some improvement~ take care. Sara
