my wife lost 22 lbs is this common with diverticulas
Yes, l lost 40lbs. with my first bout of diverticulitis and had to have surgery for a temporary ostomy to give my bowels time to heal. The last thing I wanted was food, I lived on Starburst candy and slushies, the icy cold drinks helped ease my stomach pain. I recently had another flare up and lost 14lbs. in two weeks due to pain, bloating and constipation. I now avoid red meat and rely on tuna, salmon, plant based protien and dairy.
over what period of time? diet changes when someone has diverticulitis, so a change in diet usually causes weightloss.
I lost quite a bit of weight when I was having several bouts of diverticulitis one right after the other - (not 22 pounds, though - probably about 15). It was primarily because I was having to watch what I ate so carefully. After surgery in December, I have slowly started to gain some of it back - and I have 3 different sizes of pants that I have in the past or now fit in! Going for the middle size!
Yes, I lost over 25 lbs the 1st couple months. This disease totally wiped out any food cravings. She’s going to have to change her diet, make sure she takes vitamins and probiotics. I also experienced hair loss because of the lack of vitamins.
Paul,
Some weight loss is common because you are afraid to eat for fear it will cause a flare. Being on a liquid diet for a few days to two weeks when having a flare will get it off of you as well. Have her ask her doctor if she starts losing too much weight.
After my colectomy I lost a lot of weight. My doc told me I needed to eat and gain some of it back. Well, I gained it plus some. He was happy. I wasn’t. ![]()
Keep us up on how she is doing. This is the best place you can go for information because we have all been there and done it. Most of us have the tee shirt or scars to prove it.
