Weird sensation in the middle of the night

Ok so last night I was sleeping and all of a sudden I woke up out of the blue, jumped out of bed and was extremely dizzy, vision was really weird, and was nervous or in a panic. To be honest, it happened so quickly that I don't even know if I was nervous. I feel like I was. It was really scary. It only last led about 5-10 minutes and then I hopped back into bed and went to sleep. I've had similar episodes happen in the past. I'm not sure if it's a nocturnal panic attack or something way worse. I've had episodes where I will wake up out of the blue and kinda gasp for air and scream real quick, but don't remember a nightmare. I'll also feel like I see things on the wall real quick that aren't there. Puts me in a panic. Sounds so weird, I know, but has anyone else experienced anything like this with anxiety?

You may have had panic .   Those symptoms can go along with anxiety and panic, however I always recommend following up with your doctor and letting him or her know what happened. Do you have a history of generalized anxiety?

I have had the dizziness, panic, and visual occurrences but not where it woke me up from sleep.  However I have heard of that happening to other people. Just let your doctor know and if it is related to anxiety maybe speak with a counselor about what is causing the anxiety and panic. Hope you feel better soon

Hi.ive never had symptoms like that with anxiety. Sounds like you need to ask doc about sleep disorders , have seen that sort of thing where people wake screaming , or wake with a start, seeing or feeling strange things. Sounds seperate to anxiety but would make anxiety worse, sounds scary, hope someone else replies who can reassure you about this, symptoms like your breathing , going to loo etc could be anxiety, I have lots different symptoms, just horrible. Try see doctor , would love to know how you get on and keep talking, nothing worse than worrying alone when people here can help to reassure you ❤️

Yes I had those exact symptoms for years. I was told they were night terrors. The usually occured in my first few hours of going to sleep. Sometimes they would be so bad I would feel like I couldn't breathe when I woke up xx

Thank you for your reply! Yes I do have generalized anxiety disorder. I'm pretty sure it was probably a nocturnal panic attack, but not sure. I will have to ask my doctor about it.

Thank you so much! Yes I get all the breathing problems and 100 different other anxiety symptoms all day long. I did have sugar before bed so maybe that caused the panic attack? I'm not sure

Oh man that's so scary. Is it associated to anxiety?

There are some great meditative audios on YouTube for anxiety, sleep, etc. I usethem all the time and they completely call me down during the day and before I go to sleep.

there are many to choose from just do a search ,  I like to use earbuds and lie down somewhere quiet. I think they could really help you.   All anxiety starts in the brain so we must come down the brain before we can get rid of any symptoms from anxiety.   The meditations also teach you how to separate anxious and negative thinking from yourself.  😃🌸

Thank you! I have just actually started getting into some meditation videos. It does seem to help, but only for a couple of hours.

Could possibly be you were coming out of an episode of sleep paralysis. It happens to me more then I would like and your right it is very scary. I notice it tends to happen more when I go to bed extremely tired.

I do not know of anything that can stop it from happening except trying my best to get enough sleep. Once I learned what the episodes and stopped fearing them, I was able to remain calm when they did happen which caused it to pass faster.

I hit reply before my comment was finished but I wanted to add the episodes could also be night terrors. You can talk to your Dr about it and perhaps a sleep study is in order to rule out some sort of sleep disorder. Best bet is to talk it over with your Dr.

Best wishes and if possible come back and update us so others in your situation may learn something.

if you want to learn how to develop peace of mind for a long term, see if you can pick up a copy of a book called mindfulness. It teaches you how to separate negativity and anxiety from your thoughts .

The more you calm down the brain, the less symptoms you will have. This is a process, it won't happen overnight but you have to be persistent . Eventually your brain will automatically block out negativity and you won't feel the intense anxiety .

Yes it is associated with anxiety xx

Thank you so much for the for the tips! Will have to look into it!

I was thinking sleep paralysis too, but when I looked online it said you usually can't move during that. Is that true?

I also thought night terrors. I have gotten 1 sleep study and nothing showed up

Yes during an episode of sleep paralysis you can not move but coming out of it you can move and have the symptoms you described. It happens to me all the time.

Interesting. So does one even know they went through the part of sleep paralysis where they couldn't move?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. There is a name for that part too. I will look it up and come back here and let you know what it's called.

Also look up sleep drunkenness and Parasomnias... I have many episodes like you describe so have done tons of research on these.
