What are propranolol for??

Mr mother got out of hospital a few weeks ago and they found out she had sirrhosis of the liver, she has never drunk. She was in hospital for 3 weeks and was quite poorly. Since being back home she is eating well and sleeping quite well. To my horror over the weekend she had deteriorated badly she was slurring her words and had no energy to do anything, even get out of her seat. Last week she has started going on walks and was getting back to normal. I rang the doctor as I realised she was obviously on some medicine, the doctor said she couldn't tell me. My mum told me what they were today propranolol, she has deteriorated badly since being on them and the doctor phoned her today and told her to stick with them even though they made her very tired and dizzy. I would like someones thoughts please. I said not for the elderly, she is nearly 90 and not for people with liver complaints.
