what can i use to help ease citalopram side effects?

Hello today I was given 20mg of citalopram, I'm not bothered about the physical side effect just that I know this medication makes my anxiety sky rocket so bad that I can't function so I am being singed off work for the next two weeks to give this medication a chance... what can I ask my doctor for to help ease overwhelming feelings of anxiety? he has given me 12 of 2mg diazepam which he didn't really want to as it can be addictive, fair enough but I am the type of person to save them for emergency only. is there anything I can ask for which isn't known for causing addiction, that helps with extreme anxiety just while I'm adjusting to citalopram?

I have been on citalopram before and it makes me far worse before it makes me better.

Thanks.

I used propranolol beta blocker to calm the physical effects of my heightened anxiety whilst aettling into citalopram im only on 10mg and just on my 3rd week now but it did make my anxiety worse at first and seems to be calming down now .

Good luck

Are they good for the feeling of anxiety? or just the symptoms that anxiety gives?

Well they make me calmer because they reduce the physical effects like the racing heart and hot flushes but if you are someone that cant distract your mind from the anxiety then they may not work so well

I've gone from 20mg to 30mg 2 weeks ago and my anxiety is terrible and I'm feeling depressed again. Is this normal? I had a blip after Christmas so my doctor increased the dose. Surely it should make me feel better? I feel all your pain on the anxiety, I'm considering Valium

I think it is normal when you increase the dose as your body has to re adjust, valium will help but doctors don't like giving it out.

hi all,

Rhys take the diazepam to help you, as u wont get addicted over 12 days, that's why the doc gave u 12 and only 2mg, remember the anxiety is worse at the start as you know but it will go and you will get back to normal, please join us on= Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram? as loads of support on there, I wouldn't have made it without the support I got there as we are all in the same fight !! lots of posts you can read and recognise how ur feeling too.

Take care and stay strong there is light at the end of the tunnel but u need to stick with it for now.
