What did you choose for hip replacement materials? (for females?)

Hi everyone,

I am curious what you chose for your replacement materials?

I don't want metal on metal because of the poisoning. Just curious what people have gotten and how long were they told that option lasts for?

WI have one ceramic ball and rest all metal . Another both ball and femur metal with poly cup.

I also have a cerami hip with a titanium ball. Best decision by far

I left it up to my surgeon, I have metal ball with polyethylene cup

I must be the only one on here who did not know you were allowed to choose your surgeon or hip material. I knew metal on metal was a no no due to publicity. I had a charnley hip, metal post and ceramic ball cemented. I have never had any pain since operation therefore no nasty painkillers.

Left it to the surgeon. Plastic cup, metal ball and  stem, uncemented. Same as my husband. As far as I know there is not much of a male female divide, rather a surgeon divide. I understood that metal on metal is no longer used in the UK at least.

I go in tomorrow for my second hip left ceramic uncemented tomorrow the right will be ceramic and cemented his time.

There are pro's and con's for each type of joint.

Ceramic - long lasting due to hard wearing characteristics.

               -Can shatter, and if it does, it has to be replaced with another ceramic one due to debris.

Poly - Does not shatter like ceramic.

        - Not as long lasting as ceramic.  May only be suitable for lower weight patients.

Metal - Lasts a long time, does not shatter

          - Toxic when the metal wears away and fine debris enters the bloodstream.

I left the choice to the surgeon - he has more experience than me, so I did not get poly as I am too heavy, I had ceramic, and was unfortunate enough to have it shatter due to the surgeon putting it in wrong. I now have had a revision with ceramic as there will be minute particles of debris left behind.

I think you are better off getting a first class surgeon and they will probably choose the hip he feels is best. He will have more knowledge about hips than we do. Has your surgeon actually offered a choice?

I was very careful with the choice of implant because of all the problems they had with metalosis.  My implant is made by Smith and Nephew.  Its made of titanium it is considered "modular" and had a ceramic ball and poly cup.   

I will say the manufacturer of implant is often the choice of the physician and which company rep they like to work with the most.  I was lucky that the surgeon I liked happened to use the prosthesis that I wanted using the approach I thought was best in my case.  I went with a posterior lateral approach because I had a previous femoroplasty which reshapes the femur and the risk of femur fracture is 8.4% with the anterior approach.  I thought my risks were higher because of the previous surgery.

Spot on, choice of surgeon is key followed by being fit and being positive. Best to not be over weight, not a smoker or a drinker. Cheers, Richard

I didn’t know either and when I went to post op check he still didn’t tell me even though I asked. Said he couldn’t see on the screen!

I think the metal on metal that was problematic was when they used cobalt as one of the metals.

I got discharge info from the hospital which included the type of hip used plus a lot of other info.

I tried to look up my surgeons statistics but couldn’t find anything

I must admit I thought they were supposed to give you a discharge pack plus anY tablets you needed to take. Where do you live, I am in UK.
