What is best things to use for a hip replacement?

Had a rod placed in hip 11 months ago.  Screw has come loose.  Now told need a thr!!!  Can anyone tell me what kind to ask for??  -- cement or no cement, metal or no metal and/or a ceramic???  Please help.  Thanks.

All the stems I know of are metal, usually cobalt chromium alloys or titanium alloy.  The cups can be plastic or ceramic and the heads are either the same as the stem or ceramic.  Personally I wouldn't go for ceamic on ceramic because at my age I don't think the possible longer life is worth the increased risk of catastrophic failure.

The question I asked was 'what is the median life of the implant'. The answer was 23 years and rising - good enough for me. The reason it is rising is the number of patients still alive with OK implants for more than 20 years post-op.

I am happy with cement although theoretically cementless has advantages but the rehab can be quicker with cement.  You will do better with an implant your surgeon uses regularly so if you don't like the implant change the surgeon.

Good luck.

H Shirley ,

It depends on your surgeon and your age and activity.

Cemented and non cemented depends on your age younger you are more chance you will get uncemented as You must probably will need thr revision in the future.

I'm 26 year's old . And I have ceramic on Ceramic with titanium stem uncemented Total Hip Replacement.

You will definitely need to see your surgeon first and he will explain and be able to tell what kind of is best for you.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply,

from what I understand and don,t quote me on this ,having a cemented hip joint gives you less movement and is usually advised for older patients who are less likely to need a further revision .If your younger the surgeon needs to be able to remove your old one without causing damage to your bone .I think when I  come to have my next one it will be more than likely cementedd .

hi shirley

it depends on the surgon and what they think is the best some rather use cemeted others belive its better not to and as for age that dosen't matter im 66 and had it done both times on same leg epidural way the thing that matters most is if cemented its more complicated and longer in theatre they have to use special tools to get it out

its not up to us what is best they will not listen to us i found out myself i was told by  2 they use what they want that last's long enough at the end of the day who are we to them just a number i have never known any one that can tell a surgon what to use till it gose wrong i found out the hard way told them i was allergic to silver and titanium but got both thats the notice they take.

the reason i had two ops on my right leg in 7 month was my first surgon didn't do my op properly i fell over my dogs toy box in october last yr couldn't walk after for 4 months was bed bound never saw him after hip op had physo coming they coudn't do exercises only in bed

so i got a second opinion  from another surgon from a different hospital on 22/1/13 i was devastated hadother x ray the head of the femur was the wrong size, was loose, and not lined up correctly 15/0514 had my op t correct it this was cemented like my first was in theatre 7

hrs i have a scar from top of the hip to my knee  9 week post op but i just can't bend my knee the surgon told me i need lots of physo to get my muscle going again and still have pain he told me once he can get the knee to bend then i will get shut of the pain.

this was just caused from a silly little fall i had over a dogs toy box also i never got the chance to ask what i was getting cement wise from the first surgon.

i can't wait to see him in august when i face him in court he as cost the nhs 2 million pounds for mameing 58 patients and still allowed to carry on working for the hospital i first had mine done at i wish i had have known it was him when he did mine they should be named and shamed.

just had to throw about age in regarding uncemented to cemented its up to the surgon unless you have bad health or any complications but it still will get done choose what you have put in and as never been recalled i have never known any one that has had a choice and no of lots of ppl thats had it done.

so hope you get the chance to ask what to have what you want and see if you get it and good luck

hi

i now have screws plates rod is right down to just above my knee you let him decide what is best for you if he wont tell you then get another surgon i don't want any one to go through what i have make a list out what you want to know btw i was admmited as an emergency but no one told me anything when i first had it done i went back 3 weeks ago he told me i have metal plates, titanium rod but to be honest i feel he didn't listen when i told him i was allegic to silver  this is my second surgon im on about all im bothered about is i don't have to have it done again he did reasure me the plates are not sterling silver as they covered with something to stop bits dropping of causing poison i cant rememba just what he said they were covered with.

also  what happened to me dose not mean this is going to happen to you or any one else that is waiting for hip replacement i was just unlucky if you have to have it done then go for it also every one heals diffrently my was longer in theatre due to been so complicated from the first one i do not want to frighten any one by telling you about my experiencine but its mainly to do with age i am the living proof my mother was 63 when she had her first one she was 78 and that was cemented it dose last longer i must admit if its done right.

.

good luck shirley keep us posted

sorry made mistake my mother was 78 and not 63 hit wrong keys.
