What is it?

I've had anxiety since I was a little boy starting off when I was around 10 when my father left and it's gradually increased over the years and it's been affecting my every day life more and more. I was able to deal with it when I was taking mirtrazapine as they helped with insomnia and was able to suppress the feelings of anxiety and depression but after a while they stopped working an now I'm back to my old self. But the thing is a few months ago I had this awful chemical smell follow me around everywhere I go and it would come and go every month or so and last a day or two but it was only me that could smell it? but even when I couldn't smell it i'd constantly ask people if I smelt bad but no they said they couldn't smell anything and ever since then I've been forced to stay at home as I constantly think that I smell bad, has anyone experienced this sort of thing before an could it be anxiety or a totally different illness? I've told my gp about this but she is pretty useless and just prescribed my sertraline now but I'm still freaking out all the time about smelling bad

8th october, Having just read your message, that must be awful having that smell   around you , have you been to see and ear nose and throat specialist ? you may have some problems with your sense of smell in your nostrils, do you suffer from epilepsy, as often they get an OLFACTORY AURA which is a smell before they jhave a fit, but that doesnt sound like youm, but no harm in knowing this, first you haven to rule out Pathological reasons, then it maybe Psychological reasons, but  first rule out problem with your smell receptors  which actually stem from our brains ( the cranial nerves) it is an area i work in neuirosciences, hope i have given you some help, let me know how you get on please. Callum

ps Olfactory means sense of smell

Hi I think it's defo anxiety I had the same thing a couple of years ago just had a funny smell up my nose like a metalic smell, went to my docs and I'm sure he thought I was crazy but it stayed for at least 3 months then over night it went strange!!!!

Thank you so much for both of your replies I'ts kinda good that someone has experienced the same thing as me and yeah I get that horrible metallic/chemical smell too and I wish I could just find out the cause of it and hopefully find  some treatment for it as it just keeps coming and going and causing me so much stress.    I really appreciate the advice Callum I'm going to see my gp once more and hopefully get referred to a specialist and see how things go from there.

its callum again, I had a terrible smell and taste for ages and it  was a dental propblem, since then the taste and smell have gone, so have a dental check up.

It might be the onset of gingervitis?
