Hi glandular gang. Just wanted to know is there a difference between glandular fever the epstein virus and infectious mononucleosis. Reason im asking is I just found my hospital letter and it says signs of EBV infection. But im not sure which ive had glandular fever or mono.

Symptoms at the beginning in June were

1. Severe fatigue: like I came home from work and just jumped in bed not bothering to eat or anything. Was like this for a few days.

2. Dizziness/ Unbalanced feeling: This came a week or so later after the initial infection and has remained with me on and off ever since. At first was scary now just very annoying.

3. Anxiety: Im a bit anxious anyway but when I was infected wow Ive never known anything like it panic attacks that last 12 hours shaking brain just fogged out completely and also a bit of depression from being so ill all the time. Touch wood this has calmed a bit now but still there.

4. Under active thyroid: as of now my blood test came back saying my thyroid was under active now whether this is the reason recovery is hindered Im not sure. However the Dr is going to do a final blood test to determine whether I should be put on thyroid medication. 

So from that which would I have glandulus feverus  or mono.

So sorry to hear things still been so tough for you at the moment. Still thinking about you and believing in your recovery.

I know it gets confusing with all these terms EBV and glandular fever and infectious mononucleosis, etc. My understanding is that EBV is the virus that causes the illness, which is glandular fever or mono (infectious mononucleosis) - and Kurt is right glandular fever and mono are just different names for the same thing. Mono is generally used more so as the term in the USA whilst glandular fever used more so in the UK.

I hope that makes sense, that is my understanding anyway but a doctor would be able to tell you for sure!

Virtually everyone by the age 35 has EBV. But not every EBV proceeds to mono(grandular fever, if you're British).

Mono/gf has symptoms.

Had ur immune system been stronger you'd not have any symptoms ie mono.
