Hi everyone
I'm having hip replacement soon. I wanted to know if any of you had the anterior approach as opposed to the posterior approach. Also, what kind of bet is most helpful, meaning either a regular inner spring or a memory foam? I need to get a new bed before surgery and went shopping today. Anyone?
I had one of each, left anterior and right posterior. If i had to do it over again i would go for posterior again for my left hip. It took a bit longer for recovery and there were a few more precautions to take but my end results for my right posterior hip is far more superior.
I have a spring bed and it is working for me. I like it.
Hi. I bought the most expensive bed I could afford recently (it was mega bucks - a Vi Spring ) but haven't regretted one single minute or pound! You need to go and try out different types of mattress to suit you in a good retailer and The Bed Council or the Sleep Council (can't remember which) has loads of tips on what to look out for. Memory foam is great but hot and sometimes you can get stuck turning over in it and it doesn't suit some people particularly if menopausal and hot flushing! Sorry, don't know your age. My new bed is a wool mattress with zillions of pocket springs which mKes me feel as if I'm sleeping on a cloud it's so supportive. Good luck with buying a bed and as someone said, you spend loads of money on a suite which you only sit in for a few hours and then people scrimp on their bed which they spend about eight hours in in one go.
Was wondering what we were 'betting ' on ..then realized you meant BED!
I had posterior approach and everything fine..will have the same again for the other hip!
We have a pocket sprung mattress but with a 4" memory foam topper...tried a Tempur mattress on hols but it was too hot!!
Also our spare bed has a sort of combined sprung and memory foam and thats really comfy....your op side will be quite sore for weeks...I couldn't sleep on that side till about week8 after op!
Hi Liz,
Both my hips were done with the poster is approach - I'm 6 weeks post op now with my right...my left hip was done 7 months prior to the right.
No complaints! We don't get the option to have the anterior approach where I live in Canada. My friend, who is a doctor, (and is American), is getting her hip done in Seattle - the anterior approach. She said its important to find a surgeon who's done Alot of them - minimum 200. Reason being, there's a big learning curve.
Her surgeon has done 800.
Good luck!
As i said here above, i had the right hip done May 2013 posterior approach, and i am completely happy with the results. I had the left hip done this past March 2014 anterior approach, 10 months after my first surgery, and i regret not having done it posterior. There is numbness and swelling of the entire thigh that you get with anterior, at least most people have it, they say most of the numbness and swelling will fade away but there will be some left permanently. All of which i did Not experienced with posterior. Also, the recovery for anterior may not always be as speedy as they claim, of course everyone recovers at a different pace, i am now entering my 10th week with anterior and still have to use the cane because i relapsed after doing well the first few weeks.
