What medication can I take for anxiety that won't make it worse in the start up period

I was started on sertraline for anxiety, and almost ended up being sectioned, made my anxiety a million times worse, I'm withdrawing now and still traumatised, no one warned me about the increase in anxiety, lack of emotion except for our fear! If I feel i need different meds for my anxiety what meds I need to know what WON'T ramp up my anxiety in the start up period, I still can't sleep and sertraline gave me a gag reflex for any solid food, again it's subsiding but not fully. Can anyone help?

That's awful! My doc gave me Citalopram, only 10mg to start, which did help me. X

With regards medication and severe contrindications.

If you have had real problems with your medication your GP would normally withdraw that drug and see how you get on, it can howver be difficult introcucing a new drug as you are withdrawing and claring out you body of that medication.

Has your GP introduced a new medication yet ?

There are many medications for anxiety on the market, and your GP will need to take certain health problems you have. Because of your problems He needs to consider what the end result will be and will need to prevent any further problems.

Generally we cannot give any suggestions, I can however give you the tools to research medications, although your GP will not really aknowledge your requests and work on his own recommendations and experience.

Look on the section on medications on this site or visit NHS CHOICES web pages.

The latter is the site I have used in the past.for research  reasons

i cannot recommend a particular medicatiion, but please your doctor for a different one.

They affect people in many different ways - so there must be one that will help you.

Do remember that they take about eight weeks to kick in, and that some side-effects are usual, which go away by week five.

Hope this helpa.
