if you have monofocals for distance in both eyes, hat kind of readers do you need for internediate and near?
The standard would be to just get some over the counter +2.5 D readers. You can get some progressive types but most I have seen do not let you see distance through the top of the lens. You still have to take them off to see clearly in the distance.
I use +1 or +1.25 reading glasses for intermediate (computer screen at 2-3 feet) and +2.25 reading glasses for reading books or smartphone at a closer distance.
The best solution for readers, but not the least expensive, is just a pair of progressive prescription eyeglasses. This will give you +2.5 D reading as well as correct any residual astigmatism and sphere error in both eyes. That will improve vision at all distances without having to remove the glasses. They will also be very helpful as an option for the best night vision driving glasses.
progressives didn’t work for me before the cataracts. so a bit hesitant about it.
that is what i need with symfony. do you think i will need higher power with monofocal?
I think there is a difference between progressives before IOL surgery, if you have a significant distance prescription, to after cataract surgery with distance fully corrected with the IOL. I still do not have a pair of progressives correct for both eyes after surgery (only one). But even with one eye corrected for distance these progressives are easily the most comfortable, thinnest, and lightest glasses I have ever worn. Once I settle on having Lasik or not, I will get a “final” pair of progressives to use as readers and night driving.

I purchased and tried three different reading glasses after the monofocal distance surgery in both eyes starting from +2.0, +1.5 and +1.25. Now, I am wearing +1.5. The vision for the first four weeks keep changing, so I suggest you go to a local pharmacy one or two days after the surgery to buy the one that provides best readability. If it does not work after a few days, then you can revisit the store to try the one with different powers.
Yeah my optomitrist gave me a 2.5 add but that is only good for something right in front of my face. I have a spectrum of readers now for my Eyhance and think 1.5 is about the right compromise. Depending how close the near vision object is the add will change. 1.5 is good for the computer and reading. Yes it seems to take a good six weeks for vision to finally settle in.
