What's this about?

Had my TKR 4 months ago. It's doing great, or, it was! All of a sudden, behind my surgery knee hurts like crazy when I stand up. Once I'm up and moving, other than it being stiff, it feels alright, but it's so tight in that area it's making it hard to enter or exit my car, to stand after sitting and to walk when I first stand up. Never was like this before and I did not injury that leg in any way shape or form.

Anyone else have something like this. BTW my range is 121 so it's not that.

Does this happen after you've been sitting for an extended amount of time?

Hi Grammie. I am 5 & a half months post op and it's the same for me. I've had this problem for a couple of months with no sign of any improvement, no matter how much exercising, physio or stretching I do. My physio doesn't seem concerned about it. I see my surgeon next week and see what he says about it. It really hampers my movement, just like you....eg getting in n out of car, walking down steps or going downhill etc. Hang in there.

I didn't realize that behind my knee is bruised, can't see behind myself, but my husband noticed it today. I have NOT twisted, over extended etc that knee and there should be no reason to have bruises. Let me know what your MD says. I have spinal surgery coming up in about 2 1/2 weeks and my knee has to hold me so I don't fall

I have a painful swollen knee plus  bruise. Should I go to A and e or wait. TIA

Maybe it's scar tissue I had mine on may 25 and I have scar issue built up I have to go for knee manipulation on Monday am

Hi Grammies

It's a relief to read your message cos I am in exactly the same state. I am 4 months post TKR and am back in as much pain and stiffness as 2 months ago. The pain behind my knee and a bit on the outside of my knee wakes me up when I turn over during the night. First thing in the morning I try a few revolutions on an old exercise bike to get me moving. Going downstairs is awful and getting up from a chair difficult. My knee is very hot most of the time. I am back on 6 hourly paracetamol and worried I am just going backwards. My bend has. decreased although I only got to 115 maximum anyway. I find walking on any uneven ground or on a camber makes it much worse as well. I am putting off my second knee TKR until I se if this one ever gets better. I suppose we better stay positive but it's not easy is it?

Best wishes

Jennie

I'm giving in this week and going to see my surgeon just to be on the safe side. I'm having extensive spinal surgery Sept 1st and failing after surgery could become a life in a wheelchair. I'm concerned about the bruising down my outer leg too. Wasn't there until resently. My range is normal 120, but the pain is getting unbearable. I can't imagine having leg, back and neck post-op pain all together, I'll go mad!

I'll keep you posted. Stay strong, and keep marching on! HA HA.

BTW, I'm going to Disneyland later this month and am NOT looking forward to walking around all day. My pride might have to take a back seat and I'll get a wheelchair for the day.

Hi Jennie. I'm in exactly the same place you are! I'm 5 n a half months post op  n your post could have been written by me! I'm seeing my surgeon this afternoon. I'm a bit nervous about it! I'm supposed to have my other knee done too but won't even consider it until at least a year post op from this one. God, why does it take so long to recover???

Please if you would, let me know what your doctor says. I can't get an appointment for 2 weeks with mine!

Hi Grammie. Well, my doc didn't have much to say at all! He said I'm " a slow healer"! It just takes longer in some people! I was only in there for 10 minutes! Nothing was explained to me at all. Sorry I can't help you out with a better response. He told me they'd see me in another 6 months and take x-rays then. But even after explaining it all to him, he wasn't at all concerned, so I can only guess that all this is normal for some of us. We just have to relax, keep on with our exercises and be patient.  Hang in there!! I'm always here if you want to talk about it. Cheers from Shan

Thank you for keeping in contact.

Hi Grammie and Jennie and Shan, I am the same, I am 22 weeks and still suffer stiffness and tightness...was told I am doing too much.

The back of my leg also give me problems...can get really sore and I do not know what causes it. My bend is good too. My physio when I went for the first 6 weeks after surgery said it was just the healing and said you really do not want to know what they did in there. She also told me it just will take time to heal. She did however do accupuncture 3 of the weeks on the back of my knee(something I never would have entertained before) but it did help but only for a couple of days. Just take care and it will take time and patience..something I have had to learn how to be. xx

Hi Grammie Sue and Shan

we must be slow learners/healers! I am now in France, We live here half the year and as it is a bungalow we dont have any stairs. I am sure that this is making a huge difference. Before we left the UK i was up and down the stairs loads of times a day packing etc. and by evening the pain behind my knee was pretty grim. It doesnt seem so bad this week The other difference here is that I have bought some stuff from a French physio which I am massaging on and behind my knee morning and night. it doesnt have anything chemical in it but it is very cooling and probably has a placebo effect.  Maybe I am kidding myself and it is just the warmer weather that is helping but i do feel that I walked better today.  Getting in and out the car is still painful, as is putting on socks and pants! I am not doing any formal exercises, just walking and riding my bike slowly, on the flat and only for 10 mins. I have given up exercising in a pool cos I think it is deceptive and easy to do too much. I just walk in the water for 5 mins. What do you all do? I am back to the surgeon on my 6 month anniversary. I assumed everything would be honky dory by then. But I dont think so now.

You have a lot more health stuff to deal with Grammie. I hope Disney goes great and why not let them push you round in a wheel chair. Are you going with grandkids? they'll enjoy pushing you.

Hi Jennie. Oh YES about putting on pants, socks, shoes etc!! I meant to tell my surgeon that too! One thing my physio does is about 10/15 minutes of massage on the back of my knee to break up scar tissue. My knee always feels better the next day or so. Wish I could have that done every day! You're also right about the warmer weather being good for your pain. That's a definite. Hey lucky you, living in France!! It sounds like that will be much better for your recovery. Just take things easy. We will get there!! Eventually! Enjoy France!

Hi I am not an expert on knees however I have larned through personal experience as well as during my nursing career that stairs can exacerbate a knee problem.

Hi delirious! Yes that is very true. Thankfully I have ramps at my house. It's just when I am out that I have to contend with stairs from time to time. Thanks for your comment.

You are welcome.

Take care
