After reading all the posts on nasal problems, including sore throat, hoarseness, allergies, etc., I could identify with all of you. It all started 2 1/2 years ago. Saw ENT, who ordered a cat scan and said it was clear. Went for 2nd opinion, and was told the same, and was sent to pulmonologist who after 2 months dismissed me. No lung problems. Then went to allergist, who claimed I was allergic to dust and mold. After 3 allergy shots, I quit. From there more ENTs, and finally went to dentist who took X-rays, called in oral surgeon who called in Ethmoid specialist. He just happened to be a partner of the 1st doc I saw who took the CAT scan. After reading it, he concluded it was chronic ethmoid sinusitis. Had surgery. All was well. Next saw gastro MD, and had endoscopy. Had giant para esophageal hernia, so Nissen Fundoplication done. Six mos. of being normal again was enjoyed, then operation failed. Had Barium swallow which showed a new hernia, so back to all the symptoms of GERD again. Now have appt. at Mayo Clinic to have 2nd surgery done. The hiatal hernia was causing all the problems from the start, so can't wait to have the redo. Mayo is #1 in the USA. Appt. set for 1/27/15.
Hi Mary,
You sure have been going through it all, I really hope that your next op will relieve Yuri our of all your issues. Good luck to you.
Yes I second that - good luck mary!
Hi Mary, so did your Nissen's fail because of the hernia? How did you know, was it the return of symptoms? When you have the "re" what will they do? I'm interested because as I've said before my Nissen's has failed and wondered if it could be corrected.
Julie, I won't know what happened until I go to Mayo Clinic in 2 weeks for a GI procedure. The giant paraesophageal hernia I had before the 1st surgery was repaired. The barium swallow test I just had shows a new, small hernia has formed. The old symptoms, are back, but in more severe form. I will not take drugs, but have found decaf green tea with ginger (Earth Fare) works well, and when things get bad, I take a Tums. I sleep sitting up in the bed, and during day, just try to stay busy. I love to go to the gym, but, am putting that on hold until I talk to the doctor.
When did you find out your Nissen had failed and what were your symptoms? Had you have any tests yet to conform? Are you taking any med?
As for as the nissen being corrected, yes it can. I went online and googled "Nissen failures." Very iformative.
Hi Mary, thanks for your reply. The actual Nissen's op went well and I had no problems with the recovery. I didn't feel any different after surgery than before. I've had an endoscopy and the surgeon has said that the wrap looks ok. I'm wondering if maybe the wrap is too loose. I have looked on line at Nissen failures but there were so many horror stories! I had a 24 hour motility test last week and am waiting for the results. All I want is to feel well again!
Hi, Julie, I'm in the same boat as you are....From what I've read, it could be too loose or maybe it slipped, causing an opening for that little hernia to appear. Please let me know the results of your test. I'll let you know mine when I return from Mayo.
